"Maximum Forwarding Hop Count..." and Abnormal Mail Routing After Upgrade to Domino 5.0.3 or Later

Technote Number: 1093855

Problem:
Changes have been made to the Router in Domino 5.03 in respect to how the
Router determines the path to the Internet. Prior to Domino 5.03, the Router
was coded to utilize the settings defined in the Server Configuration document
(specifically, for determining next hop for these messages). If a relay
address was specified in the "Relay host for messages leaving the local
internet domain" field of the Server Configuration document, this address would
establish where all SMTP messages would go next. If there was no relay address
specified, DNS would then be queried to determine the next hop for each message.

In Domino 5.03, functionality has been re-implemented into the product to
utilize the Foreign SMTP Domain and SMTP Server Connection documents. In
Domino 5.03 or later, the Router is coded to look for Foreign SMTP Domain
documents and SMTP Server Connection documents prior to using the Server
Configuration document. If it is determined that these documents exist, the
Router will transfer the messages to the Domain defined as the one accepting
mail for the Internet. This is where most issues occur. Incorrectly defined or
configured Foreign SMTP Domain Documents and their corresponding SMTP Server
Connection documents can cause the above-described routing issues. Prior to
Domino 5.03, even if these documents were present, the Router for SMTP-enabled
servers would not "see" these documents.

Although it is possible to revert a Domino 5.0.3 or later SMTP server to the
manner mail routing worked prior to Domino 5.0.3, it is recommended that
settings in the Foreign SMTP Domain and SMTP Server Connection documents be
corrected if the above issues are experienced.

If pre-Domino 5.0.3 functionality is preferable, the NOTES.INI
RouterIgnoreForeignSMTPDomains=1 variable (described below) can be set.
Setting this variable and restarting the Router on the Domino SMTP server
causes the Router to no longer use the Foreign SMTP Domain document; instead,
the Router relies (1) on the "Relay host..." field in the Server Configuration
document, if a relay host is defined, or (2) on DNS to route outbound SMTP
messages.

The following description of the RouterIgnoreForeignSMtpDomains variable is
found in the "Domino 5.03 Release Notes."

"Server

Mechanism to revert to R5 handling of Foreign SMTP Domain documents

R5.0.3 adds multiple relay support utilizing Foreign SMTP Domain documents. In
R5 these documents were ignored unless SMTP External was disabled. For
customers wishing to maintain the current R5 behavior the following notes.ini
variable should be used: RouterIgnoreForeignSMTPDomains=1.

Note: This change will affect only customers with an R5.x server with SMTP
External enabled and Foreign SMTP Domain documents in the Domino Directory who
got used to R5's behavior."
Supporting Information:

The above-described functionality was added to Domino 5.0.3 as a result of SPR
#BACY48MM8W, which reported the absence of this previously-available
functionality. For Domino 4.6.x SMTP MTA environments, many Administrators use
these documents to implement Intranet Routing between the MTA server and other
internal SMTP host systems.

SPR# BACY48MM8W, MCOA4A6C9N, MLOT4AAJAU - Add support for Foreign SMTP Domains,
SMTP Connection documents and the ablility to specify which Global Domain
document should be used by default on the server (as with the R4.x SMTP MTA).
