Introduction

The new Metrics application in IBM® Connections provides a comprehensive set of quantitative (measures) and qualitative (descriptions) metrics that help measure the business value of IBM Connections in your organization. IBM Connections uses IBM Cognos Business Intelligence to collect and maintain metrics, and to generate reports that users can view directly in IBM Connections.

Basic terminology

Let's begin by defining the terms used around Connections 4.0 Metrics reports.

Unique

This term occurs in the title of many reports, such as, “Number of unique contributors” and “Number of unique downloaded files.” In the particular segment, “unique” means that the target statistical objects will be distinguished to remove the duplication from the number of the report.

For example, let's use “Number of unique downloaded files” and show the report in for a 7-day range from 10/1/2012 --- 10/7/2012 (see table 1). Note that there are total 10 files (File1 --- File10) downloaded during this time frame.

In this example, the segment is a day and, within each day, no matter how many times one file was downloaded, it will only contribute “1” to the report value of that day.

Connections Metrics does not provide a Total value for unique reports on the overall date range. That means when you select the past 7 days, the report can tell you the unique number for each individual day, but it cannot offer a total number of unique downloaded files in the overall 7 days. It is same with other date ranges with different segments, such as the past 4 weeks, the last quarter, or last 12 months.

Instead of a Total value, unique reports provide another overall number, MAX, which is the highest number among all individual segment points. For this example, the MAX value is 4, which occurred at 10/04/2012.

Also note that unique reports don't support All years date range.

Visitor

This term is mainly used in the “Number of unique authenticated visitors” report and is similar to the concept of log in. The visitor term is applicable for IBM Connections overall, for a separate application (such as Communities, Wikis, or Blogs), or for a single application instance (such as a wiki instance).

Once you, as an authenticated user, become a visitor of one object, you will be automatically regarded as a visitor of its parent-level object. For example, if you access a wiki page by a direct link, you become a visitor of the wiki instance that contains the wiki page. At same time, you also are a visitor to the Wikis application and whole Connection system as well. If the wiki instance is located in a Community, you are also a visitor of this community instance and Communities application.

Visitor implicitly has a unique character, meaning that, as in the above example, no matter how many times in one day you log in to Connections to read a wiki page, you will only be counted as one visitor in that day.

As with unique metrics, the number of unique authenticated visitors reports don't support All years date range.

Visit

This term is mainly used in the “Number of visits” report and is based on the read behavior. The visit term is applicable for IBM Connections overall, for a separate application (such as Communities, Wikis, or Blogs), for a single application instance (such as a wiki instance), or for an entry-level object (such as a wiki page).

Once one object is visited, its parent-level object will automatically be visited. For example, if you access a wiki page through a direct link, then the wiki page is visited one time. At the same time, the wiki instance that contains the wiki page is also visited one time, as is the Wikis application, and the overall Connections system. In addition, if the wiki page is located in a community, the community instance and Communities application are visited as well.

The visit number is counted based on the times, meaning that, if a wiki page is accessed 10 times in one day, then the number of visits to this page is 10 in this day. However, the visit number will be a little different on an instance or application level. Specifically, we refer to the wiki page as an entry-level object, just like a blog entry, a file, or a forum topic, as opposed to a wiki, blog, and forum, in which the entry-level objects are, are instance-level objects.

All wiki instances belong to the Wikis application. The visit number for the instance and application level is related to the log-in session, which means that, within one log-in session, no matter how many times one instance is visited, the instance is counted as being visited only one time.

For example, if you log in to IBM Connections and navigate to one wiki instance, then the wiki instance is visited one time. After a while, you go to another application, such as Blogs, and then sometime later return to the wiki instance you visited previously.

In this case, the visit number of the wiki instance will still be 1, and not be increased to 2, because you are still in the same log-in session. If the session expires, and you visit the wiki instance again after re-logging in to a new Connections session, then the visit number to this wiki instance is increased by 1.

Most/Top

Metrics reports beginning with the term “Most” or “Top” usually show the vitality of items or people in the Connection organization. The metrics contained in the report are ranked in a list. Every Most/Top Metrics report has its particular measures to rank the statistic target, and all factors involved in the calculation are displayed as columns in the ranking table. Note that Most/Top reports don't support All years and customized date ranges.

Metrics report categories

Number of new items category

In this category, the reports present the data in a trend chart, simply showing how many new items were created in a date point. Depending on the segment you choose, the date point could be a day, week, month, or year.

In IBM Connections 4.0, only create behavior is counted; the delete action has no impact on the report value. For example, in one day, a total of 5 new wiki pages were created, two of which were deleted later in the same day, so in the Number of new wiki pages metrics, the number for this day is 5, not 3.

The Number of new items reports provide a total number for a certain date range by adding up all the data point values within the selected date range. Table 2 lists the Number of new items metrics.

Number of unique items category

This kind of Metrics show the report data in a trend chart. The value in a date point stands for the unique number of the statistical target. Depending on the segment you choose, the date point could be a day, week, or month.

The unique items metrics does not support All years date range and cannot provide a total number for a selected date range; instead, the unique report indicates a Max unique value of all date points within the selected date range. Table 3 lists the number of unique items metrics.

Number of visits category

This category shows the report data in a trend chart. The value in a date point means how many times the statistical target was visited. Depending on the segment you choose, the date point could be a day, week, month, or year.

We introduced the “visit” concept earlier, whereby the visit metrics apply to an application instance, an application, and Connections overall. The Number of visits reports provide a total number for a certain date range by adding up all the visit values within the selected date range. Table 4 lists the Number of visits metrics.

This metrics only count the application level visit. That means, in one log in session, no matter how many instances of one application are visited, it will only contribute 1 visit to this metrics as an application visit.

Note:
This metrics only count the visit on this community instance level. That means, in one log in session, no matter how many times this community is visited from no matter what application, it will only contribute 1 visit number to this metrics.

The Number of visits in overall will be inconsistent with the total visit numbers of break down applications. The reason is, in one log in session, one community will be visited many times through different applications, such as visit from wikis in this community, then visit from files in this community. As the overall perspective, the community instance is visited only 1 time, but for the individual application, the wikis and files all are visited 1 time for each. So the sum of visit numbers of individual applications is 2, but overall community visit number is 1.

Most active items category

The Most active metrics category presents the report in a ranking table, in which the items are ordered by their vitality within a selected date range. The applicable date ranges for most active metrics are Last 7 days, Last 4 weeks, Last quarter, and Last 12 months. It does not support All years and Custom date ranges. The Most active metrics provide the reports on four levels:
  • Entry level. Such as most active wiki pages. The metrics are usually provided in Community Metrics.
  • Instance level. Such as most active blogs. The metrics are usually provided in Global Metrics.
  • Application level. Just one metrics report, “Most popular apps,” in Global Metrics.
  • People level. Just one metrics report, “Top contributors,” in Community Metrics.

Most metrics category

Some of these metrics also show reports in a ranking table, but the measure would be a sample. The order could be decided by only one factor, such as “Most followed people”. The only effective action is follow. As with the other most active metrics, these metrics support only Last 7 days, Last 4 weeks, Last quarter, and Last 12 months, but not All years and Custom date ranges.
