High Yield Calls Reduces CPU Performance on AIX and Solaris

Technote Number: 1089728

Problem:
There is a performance issue in the nti layer that creates the excessive
yielding.

This issue was reported to Lotus Software Quality Engineering and has been
addressed in Domino 6.0.1 and 5.0.12.

Excerpt from the Lotus Notes and Domino Release 6.0.1 MR fix list (available at
http://www.lotus.com/ldd):

Server
SPR# CMCY5FGT7A - Excessive calls to yield were found in the Network Transport
Interface, this fix reduces the need for the yield calls and results in overall
better server performance. [DRAFT Document #:1089728 ] Did TUR.

Excerpt from the Lotus Notes and Domino Release 5.0.12 MR fix list (available
at http://www.lotus.com/ldd):

Server - Core Services
SPR# CMCY5FGT7A - Fix to reduce frequency of yield calls from the network IO
layer, specifically yield calls associated with the function Endp_AcquireToken.

Supporting Information:

To extract the yield levels from perfrmpmr data, run the curt utility and grep
for yield:

Count Total Time % sys Avg Time Min Time Max Time Tot ETime Avg ETime
Min ETime Max ETime SVC (Address)
(msec) time (msec) (msec) (msec) (msec) (msec)
(msec) (msec)
======== =========== ====== ======== ======== ======== ========
========= ========= =========
96651 204.3270 2.68% 0.0021 0.0017 0.0128 398.6210
0.0041 0.0021 5.3369 yield(317c80)

This has been only seen on high-end Sun and Pseries hardware; the CPU reduction
on these systems is significant.
