Upgrade Process and Steps for Moving to Domino / Notes 9.0
The follow are the steps and process to upgrade Domino servers and Notes Clients. Please note this process is for simple type upgrades and there will be addition actions or steps required based on the features installed and running. The goal of this document is to provide a generalized steps, approach and activities to perform a successful Domino 9.0 upgrade. Additional details and screen shots to follow in Domino 9.0 Wiki. Enjoy..
Reviewing the Existing infrastructure
-
First you need to review the existing infrastructure you need review and record the following information:
-
OS and Domino Versions – What to try to use or upgrade base on the same base Version for best fidelity
-
Number of Domino Server and types that required to be upgraded
-
Design changes or requirements for Names.NSF, Mail Templates and or replications models.
-
Record what features and services are running on the Domino Servers
-
Transaction Logging
-
DAOS
-
Logging , Mail, Activity, Web, etc
-
Traveler (Please be sure to shut Traveler task down and take this out of the notes.ini before upgrading) Note When your ready to install the new traveler 9.0 code this will add the traveler task back in for you.
-
Mail Tracking, Mail Journalling
-
Third Party Products
-
HTTP, IMAP, POP services and uses
-
If upgrading Notes Clients? Then record the numbers and versions deployed
Once all the items have been identified and documented you are ready to begin your design or upgrade process activities. Please note that you should also be identifying any additional new features or functions to be added to the upgraded servers as a post-activity or configuration requirement. This may include such features as changing the directory structure from distributed to a consolidated model. Maintenance, Implementing or adding new services that was identified in section 1 that were not running previously, etc.
These items should then be documented into the overall design and deployment strategy document for performing an upgrade to Domino 9.0. This design document should list the additional steps and details required or identified during the review process. Also with what additional steps may be required or necessary during the upgrade process.
Note As mentioned this document is to provide a guideline and steps necessary to performing the upgrade process. Your design will take it to the next level to identify these additional details necessary for your customers successful Domino 9.0 upgrade activities.
Upgrading and Moving to Domino 9.0
-
-
The first thing we need to do is upgrade one of the administrative Notes clients to the latest version of the notes admin and design to 9.0
-
The next step is to upgrade the administrator server for the Domino domain. Shut down the Server . Be sure to disable the Server task or or scripts till upgrades are completed.
Note If you are not ready to modify the address book changes to other servers you will also be required to lock down the design replication activities to servers or disable replication until you're ready. In your design document should identify the address book changes activities or replication models you would like use for the duration of the servers upgrade process.
Next we want to review the configuration of the newly upgraded administration server. You need to validate that the upgrade was successful by performing in reviewing with the Domino admin client the configurations. These would include:
-
The Domino address book was updated
-
Run Server console command activities, such as show server to validate the current and correct version
-
Run a “Show tasks” or “sh ta” to validate that existing configurations and task-bar running correctly after the upgrade.
-
Perform maintenance on the primary system files and open and review these files after the maintenance has completed
-
Next we want to move on to the Domino Hub and Mail servers and perform the upgrade activities and test mentioned from the administrative server upgrade steps. He will continue this process until all mail servers have been successfully upgraded.
-
Perform maintenance activities listed in “Steps 2 & 3 listed above” for each upgraded server
-
Perform general testing and access to users mail Databases validating accessibility and functionality is working correctly.
-
Now we need to add any post-upgrade services or activities and load them on the appropriate servers or using the appropriate configuration in the address book and replicated to the servers. This may include such items as
-
Converting mail template databases files
-
Transaction Logging
-
DAOS
-
Traveler
-
Edit or update of server document modifications for new features, function or identified changes required for the new Domino 9.0 infrastructure
-
Other based on type of server requirements activity or usage?
Application server activities and migrations
-
Now we are ready to review and prepare for application server migrations and activities. These activities require additional review of the application architecture and any additional development requirements or changes that may be required or interfere with an existing application infrastructure server.
