Overview
IBM Connections 4 provides an Embedded Experience and an Updates gadget that can be integrated with IBM Notes and iNotes 9.0 clients. Domino Administrators will need to work with IBM Connections Administrators who have
wsadmin console access to perform the necessary configuration steps for IBM Connections.
The following sections provide overviews of both the Updates and Embedded Experiences gadgets. For more information on what's new in IBM Notes 9, watch the full video from Scott Souder, IBM Message Product Manager
Demo - IBM Notes Social Edition V9 Note: The UI in the video may differ from the IBM Connections default theme and some functionality may differ depending on the version of IBM Connections that is installed.
Updates
In the following video excerpt, Scott Souder, IBM Messaging Product Manager, provides a demonstration of the Updates gadget, also known as the Activity Stream, in IBM Notes.
Embedded Experiences
In the following video excerpt, Scott Souder, IBM Messaging Product Manager, provides a demonstration of the Embedded Experiences gadget for an IBM Connections files notification in IBM Notes.
Discover Page
When integrating the IBM Connections 4, the IBM Notes Discover Page's "Quick Links" section will show a link named "Updates". Clicking this link will launch the IBM Connections Updates tab within Notes.
Note: The "Updates" quick link will only appear for IBM Connections 4 gadgets that are configured via the IBM Connections 4 CR3 export mechanism described below.
LiveName Integration
When integrating the IBM Connections 4 Updates gadget, any LiveName in the Notes client will have an "Updates" action in the menu. This action will open the IBM Connections 4 Updates gadget (if not already open) and filter the activity stream to show only activity from that given user.
Before you begin
Before beginning IBM Connections 4 integration, an administrator should review the
Widget approval process and follow all of the steps in the "Installation and Configuration" section of this article's parent cookbook:
IBM Domino 9.0 Social Edition OpenSocial Component Deployment Cookbook
IBM Connections Administrators should
Enable e-mail notifications on Connections if this has not been done as part of the Connections installation
IBM Domino Administrators should
Configuring Domino to send and receive mail over SMTP
IBM Connections users should review information around
Setting email notification preferences. Only individual e-mails from Connections contain Embedded Experiences. Digest e-mails will not render as Embedded Experiences.
Important: When a redirect URI for Domino is provided to Connections during either registration process below, the redirect URI must match the Domino configuration exactly, including the scheme (i.e. http or https). For more information, see the "Shindig server(s) host name" section of
Server-centric settings.
Configuration
IBM Connections 4 CR3 and Beyond (Recommended)
In IBM Connections 4.0 CR3, a mechanism was introduced to export several Widget configuration files from Connections that can then be imported into the IBM Notes Widget Catalog, removing the need for Widget Catalog administrators to fill in tedious OAuth and proxy configuration information as part of the
Widget approval process. For more information on this process, refer to
Registering IBM Notes as a consumer of the Activity Stream and Embedded Experience gadgets
When importing the Activity Stream Connections widget into the Widget Catalog, you may see a warning dialog. See this technote form more details:
Problem importing Connections AS gadget into catalog.
IBM Connections 4 CR2
Note: For full Connections integration support, one should use Connections 4.0 CR3 or newer.
Prior to IBM Connections 4.0 CR3, administrators wishing to integrate IBM Notes and iNotes 9.0 with IBM Connections 4.0 are required to:
- Register an OAuth client for Domino. For more information, refer to Registering an OAuth client with a provider
- Create IBM Connections Widgets using the OpenSocial Widget wizard in Notes and publish them to the Widget Catalog. For more information, refer to the "Creating OpenSocial Widgets" section of Widget approval process
- Approve the IBM Connections Widgets in the Widget Catalog and fill in the necessary proxy and OAuth data. For more information, refer to the "Approving a Widget in the Widget Catalog" section of Widget approval process
