Validating a radio group

I have added a validator, validateRequired, to a radioGroup, but it is not working.  In fact, the document won't even save.
 
I read where there was a problem with validating radio fields in xPages a few months back.  Is there a fix to this?  I have several radio fields that are required.

Have you tried the custom validators yet?
 
As far as I know, they work OK

Apparently there is a known issue with using validators and radio button groups, that is not yet fixed in 8.5.3.
 
If you do have something working, please post the code there.
