xe:basicLeafNode - trying to style it

I am trying to create a popupmenu and programmatically display some xe:basicLeafNodes based on a array. If I try to set the 'style' or the 'styleClass' properties of the basicLeafNode, nothing happens.

I would like to change the background color and the font. Does anyone know how to manage this or is this maybe a not implemented feature yet?

Use firebug to find out what class is used to style the elements on your webpage and then override these classes/ids in your own stylesheet

Yes, that is true, but not really an option because I have multiple styles for the same basicLeafNode object. I can not set a class or a style, so I can not do this using CSS (I wish). I have submitted a defect to the library and this problem will be solved in the next release.
