Error using sortOrder/sortColumn

Has created a view that is used by FT Search in XPage, the first column is sorted Descanding. However, do not display the results sorted.
There's sortOrder and sortColumn, they do not work or what should I specify. Tried it with the column name and column title and then select descanding
None of the choices work
Using 8.5.3

Does the view you're searching have "click to sort" on the columns you're sorting by?

I thought I had done it but it was the wrong column, embarrassing. Thanks
