Forum testers wanted - CLOSED

  • Category: Forum design
  • Platform: All
  • Release: 8.5.3
  • Role: End user,Developer,Administrator
  • Tags: Testing

 UPDATED ON AUG 10, 2011
Thank you, everyone who helped test the forum.
We have gone through the feedback and created development line items and defects to work on.

 ----
We have applied a new version of the XPages template to this forum, and would like your help testing out the changes.

If you find problems, please post a response to this forum post indicating what the issue was that you found, which browser or device you are using, and steps to recreate the issue if appropriate.

We would like to conduct this testing starting on Wednesday, July 27th, and ending on Wednesday, August 3rd.

Thanks in advance for your help!

The following changes have been made:

Display all threads of a topic on one page
In browsers, main topics and replies now appear on a single web page. There are no more thread maps. In particular, we want your feedback on the streamlining of the response hierarchy. With this implementation all replies are flat -- there are no nested responses via a web browser. This reply approach is similar to other web forums but different from the Notes client model of handling responses and responses-to-responses.

Ability to add clickable hyperlinks to a post
We have added a standard rich text editor control to allow for insertion of links in topics and replies. While creating or editing posts, look for the link icon on the far right of the editor.

Simple search indicates that a search is complete
The previous design lacked any labeling that your search had been executed.

Answered topics changed to "Resolved Topics"
Based on feedback, we have changed terminology from "Answered/Unanswered" to "Resolved/Unresolved."

With this feature, authors of topics can edit their existing posts to indicate if a question or issue has been resolved. All new topics receive the value Unresolved by default.

Plain text input on mobile devices
While in edit mode creating topics or replies, a plain text editor should appear rather than the default rich text editor. We need your feedback with your mobile device to test if this feature works and if it is a benefit.

Re: Forum testers wanted
Hi, good to hear that the forum continuously is improved. Here my findings using Chrome:

Search
When performing a search (ex. 'notes') and if you jump to a high result page (ex page 11) the pager becomes badly lined out.

User profile
When clicking on a user profile (ex. http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/xpagesforum.nsf/xpTarget.xsp?tagValue=Amanda%20J%20Bauman/Austin/IBM) the tab pannel is no longer available.

Leaving a form
When leaving a form (ex reply) there is no warning that data might get list when clicking a link.

Navigation
Would be nice to have meta data in the head of a topic clickable by making it a direct link.

Ex:
Category:Forum design (->make link)   |   Platform:All  (->make link)  |   Release:8.5.3 (->make link)   |   Role:End user (->make link)

Top 10 tags/keywords
the link result will miss the tab panel ex.

Navigation
When I have for example open the view 'By platform' and I select an author from the tagcloud in the left side I get to the result pane with a header. An example:

You clicked on: Mark Leusink

Instead to 'back to all documents' , 'go to all documents' would be better since I might not ever have opened view 'all documents'.

Navigation
please make the tags direct links
ex. Mark Leusink   |   Mar 2, 2011 4:52 PM   |   Tags: custom control events (->make link(s))   |   Replies: 3

Here it is not clear if these are 3,2 or 1 tag(s).

Navigation

In the application 'header' (I believe this has a specific name in the OneUI definition), can you make my name when logged in ex. Welcome Patrick Kwinten|Log off

Welcome Patrick Kwinten(-> make link)|Log off

this way it would be easier to scan 'my documents'.

That's it! Good luck!

Thank you for all the feedback!
We have created development line items to work on these requests.

Re: Forum testers wanted
I'm unable to browse the forum on my smartphone (Samsung Galaxy S) at all. All I get is a (scrollable) blank screen showing no content at all.

I've cleared all caches and have tried it using the build-in browser and Firefox 4.

Re: Forum testers wanted
@Mark - We are seeing a general issue with XPages apps not loading on mobile devices. We've reproduced the similar issue on an iPad and we're looking into it. We suspect something about the pre-release build of 8.5.3 we are using but that is just a working theory right now.

Re: Forum testers wanted
Since the update, the navigation thread is gone. This is probably because of the new option that shows an entire thread on a single page.

So if I open a direct link to a topic or response
(e.g. http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/xpagesforum.nsf/topicThread.xsp?action=openDocument&documentId=708E195B6472B240852578E500712F71&ca=drs-fo)
I'm unable to navigate to the other responses or the main topic.

My suggestion would be that if I open such a direct link I would still see the entire thread.

New topic - category
I am missing in the category section the option to select core controls / container controls.

I guess most of the topics here are about questions on using core controls (edit box, buttons, link control, repeater etcetera).

Advanced search - make search button more visible
I could hardly find the search button/link to submit my search...

Topic save/cancel needs to be at the top where "New Topic" is...
 - It's often completely off the page and requires scrolling to find it after entering a post, which is a bit of-putting.  I also generally see "New Topic" at the top with nothing but wasted space to the right of it, where Save & Cancel would fit very easily.

- The layout of the forum is VASTLY improved.  Good Form!  I take that back.  This edit window is still pretty well useless in a window that is less than 1300px wide or so.  But better!!

-  The forum never remembers that I want more than a piddly 25 hits per page.  GOOD: It does pagingate correctly now with 100 hits per page.  BETTER: 250 hits per page setting that's retained from session to session.  I'd vastly prefer to scroll than load yet another page.

- If the session is going to time out, warn me in real time.  The red verbiage is better than nothing, but strut your stuff here, IBM.  Make it user friendly.

- Consider making the left panel and accordian.  95% of the time I scan the main topics, maybe do some search, then head out.  I'd rather be able to have the entire window be content with a little expansion tab for the left side stuff I rarely use.  Like weatherunderground does with the right side panel on the "wundermap".  Be a nice place to set preferences just like they do as well.

Hope this helps...

Re: Forum testers wanted - CLOSED
@Mark - The issue with viewing the forum with a mobile device should now be resolved. The problem was within the build of the XPages Extension Library that we were using.

Re: Forum testers wanted - CLOSED
You're right: I can access the forum again using a mobile (android) device (Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab).

What doesn't work is that I'm still unable to respond to topics or create new topics: the RichText editor is still loaded. I've tested it using the default browser and Firefox on a Samsung Galaxy S (Android 2.3.3) and the default browser using a Galaxy Tab 10.1 (Android Honeycomb 3.1).

Did the code (I wrote/ submitted) to show a plain text field for mobile devices made it to this version of the forum?

Mark
