Hmmm

I don't understand "downloading to a specific location". The user would choose the each time based on the browser wouldn't it?

have you tried working with the file upload and download controls?

more info

I agree with David, downloading you don't have much control. Is a end user action.

Upload via the classic upload control, it will be stored in your document.

If you want it uploaded to a specific location on the Server it requires some more work, but Java it can be done.. It did it before ;-)

Can you provide more information to give you more detailed answer.

X Pages with MS Office

We are having an existing application, which has the process of check in/checkout. If the file is check out it is saved on users local drive suppose c:\checkout.User will edit the file , then he will say check in , the file is again saved in notes database. There can be last three saves with different file name, like abc1.doc, abc2.doc,abc3.doc.

Now the requirement is to build the same in xpages, which will allow only ms office files

hmm

Well I'm not sure what to tell you.  You can certainly upload and store files into the Domino Web Server via XPages.  BUT a Website, in any technology is not the same as the Notes Client.  You can have users download a file but I don't think there's any chance at all for you to control where they users chooses to store the file on their hard drive.

The Web world is just different then the Notes Client.

The only way you can control the destination for a file
The only way you can control the destination for a file when using a browser, is using something like Flash, Java, Silverlight etc. Which the user has to explicitly trust.

You cannot do this with regular web browser code due to security, imagine if you visited a website and it created a windows registry file without the user giving permission etc.

This is the same for any server, Domino, Websphere, PHP, node.js, Apache whatever.
