XPage in the client will not display

I have a strange problem

I have a user who, when attempting to open an XPage (or any XPage) in the Notes client gets the standard "Loading..." message and then a blank screen. He can open the same XPage through the browser with no problem or error. I have put print() statements in the beforePageLoad/afterPageLoad events but nothing is being written to the trace/logs.

I have checked his ECL (and even bumped up the default/signer of the XPage to have every box ticked) - no joy

Other users with identical ACL access can work fine

There are no hide-when formulas at all on the XPage

All have the same client versions (8.5.1 Standard)

Is there anything else I need to check/anything else I can do to try and debug the problem?

I am experiencing the same behavior here, and we are on 8.5.3 fix pack 1, with any Xpage. They will preview just fine in the browser, but not in the client.

Not sure where to start looking for the cause, since I am very new to Xpages.
