This has happened to me numerous times. Very frustrating! A quick tip given to me by Russell Maher (I believe) - If you right click on the custom control you will see an option Compare With => Local History. This will bring up older version of the XML which have been saved. This can be a huge time saver.

 If u copy&paste then this happens :( very frustrating. U should save after every step u do to see if there are errors. Copy&Paste in the source code view is better ;-)
