The problem is just that the image URL syntax is different for XPiNC compared to browser. Try Matt White's solution on IQJam http://iqjam.net/iqjam/iqjam.nsf/questions/20100622_XPages_in_Notes_Client!!_How_t.htm

This may be a little late, but...

This worked perfectly. 
 
With a little modification (instantiating the applicationScope variable once on page open to avoid hundreds of calls using a repeat control), it was fast and rendered the images well.
