If you want to run a production server you should always select one of the supported versions: SuSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) or RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). I have run SLES for several years (since 2006) with no problems - very stable. However, for our internal servers I wanted to upgrade to a more modern Linux when switching everything to 9.0. Instead of buying SLES I just set up a CentOS Server (which is very close to RHEL - just without the support services etc.). I also tried OpenSUSE and Ubuntu - but couldn't really get under the hood of them quickly enough. CentOS works like a charm, however.
You will want to install webmin to help you administer the server. And as David pointed out. Everything is case sensitive. However, more and more of that is coming anyway (all Java and XPages urls) so that is not really a concern. I have decided to use lowercase directory and file names in Domino to avoid issues.
And as was suggested, you want to write to Daniel Nashed and get the latest copy of his start/stop scripts. Nothing else is near those scripts ;-)
... and then you can enjoy having a "lightweight" Domino/XWork server which spends its power on running your software.
