Hi,

Having followed the advice of the 'professional IBM Notes Developer' over the past 5 years or so and fully embraced XPages and Java as the way to develop modern Notes applications for the future, I now find the same community having much lauded XPages is now calling for its demise. Although it pains me to start on the learning curve again ( I am just getting quite good at it !!), can anyone assist in pointing me in the right direction of which technology to embrace and where that leaves all my existing applications which I have painstakingly moved over to XPages where there was a tangible benefit.

If possible a 'David Leedy' style response with explanations and reasoning would be really useful rather than a list of technologies one should be familiar with, if you know what I mean ;-)

Many thanks for any thoughts you can share with me.

Mark

Same here
I fully agree with what you wrote. The only thing I'd add is that XPages seem to have lost support from their previous community for quite some time now. You can see it in this forum -- 25 posts in 2018 so far, responses included. That's next to nothing. 2017 and 2016 weren't much better. Looking at the dwAnswers forum is even more discouraging: 3 posts total in 2018 that are tagged with "xpages".

A potential answer to your question is "Wait until Notes/Domino 10 are released, then start developing with Node.js". And yes, for many of us this means going through a long and steep learning curve once again.

Maybe not dead?
IBM/HCL has said they would incorporate Dojo 2.0 in a future version of Domino. And, I heard that Bootstrap 4.0 will also be incorporated.

So, XPages may not be the favorite of the high end developers but I would not say it is dead just yet. I have to learn more about Node.js but it seems like it is a lot of work to build a nice looking interface that I can get with some of the built in controls in XPages and Bootstrap.

I don't see the point in ditching all the controls we have at our fingertips either to start again with something similar, I am no expert though. I wasn't aware Dojo 2.0 was on the cards, that is great news.

Would you not say most of the posts here have been lost to Stack Overflow haven't they? There is a steady stream, - or is that trickle, - both on NotesDomino and XPages. I wasn't inclinded to put this post on there though as it seems to be a different audience.

Many thanks for sharing your opinions guys, it does help.
