Sametime 9.0.1 needs WebSphere for the SSC and DB2 to store policies but older versions ie 8.5.2.1 could just use the Domino Community server but that will be end of life soon.

An unsupported way is to install just Sametime 9.0.1 on top of Domino without the SSC and manage the policies within the xml file. It's not supported but entirely possible but if you have problems then IBM may not be that helpful though....

For just chat WebSphere and DB2 is overkill but it is fairly trouble free so on ward administration is pretty small. It also opens the opportunity of using mobile chat clients with the addition of the Sametime Proxy if you feel that you want awareness in iNotes or mobile device chat.
