This can be done as detailed in https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSKTXQ_9.0.0/admin/config/changing__names_in_contact_and_privacy_lists.html but it's clunky.

You have to create a csv file with all the names you wish to remove from private groups and then run it
