Take a look at the Buddy List Service in Sametime Java Toolkit Developer Guide.

Basically you'll need to:

1) Add a listener to the buddy list
BLService addBLServiceListener

2) ask to get the buddy list from the server
BLService.getBuddyList

3) Retrieve the buddy list in BLServiceListener.blRetrieveSucceeded event
BLEvent.getBL

4) Manipulate the buddy list
BL.addGroup

5) Set the buddy list
BLService.setBuddyList
