Attempts to install hotfix or Fix Pack fails with "Lotus Notes/Domino or a Notes/Domino related process is still running..."

From Technote:

This issue can occur if the Domino processes are still running and cannot finish properly or if User Account Control (UAC) is blocking the install.

Workarounds

1. Ensure that all Domino-related tasks have been stopped, via the Task Manager.

2. If Domino is running as a service, open the Services Manager system of the server, and ensure that all services are off or set to "manual", and this includes the (n)service.exe and nsd.exe.

3. If all the tasks and services are stopped at that time, In a Windows environment, try launching the hotfix/Fix Pack in "Administrator" mode (Right-click on the .exe file --> "Run as Administrator"

4. If the previous steps have been executed and you are still unable to install the hotfix or Fix Pack, try starting the computer in safe mode. This should allow you to successfully install the hotfix or Fix Pack.

I am unable to install the 9.0.1 FP1 because of the error listed above.  This tech note (#1654640)  was the only instance that I could locate related to the issue.  I have stopped ALL Domino related services and restarted the server.  The Server is running Windows 2003. I have attempted to "Run as Administrator" but still get the same message.  Unfortunately, I cannot start the server in safe mode because I am accessing the server remotely (RDP).

Try

Changing the service that starts domino to manual and then reboot.

Apply fixpack

Change service back to automatic and then reboot.

Backup Software?

If you're using Symantec Backup Exec, you'll have to end all the BackupExec processes as well.

Please uninstall the 901 and rename the domino folder then re-install the domino 901 and then FP1. It works.

process explorer

use process explorer or process monitor to see what's still running.  you can do a find and search for "domino" or "notes" or whatever path your notes program files are installed to.

Thanks everyone for your input!

@Daniel - Thanks and great article.  Not sure how I missed it.

@Paul - Process Explorer worked great!  Looks like the culprit was srmagent

i ran Process Explorer and it looks like srmagent.exe may be a conflict
