Domino Server upgrade and Migration

Hello Team, 

I have 6  servers which I want to consolidate in 4.

1) Current Setup: Version 8.5.3 FPX with OS Windows 2008

2) To be setup: 2 Application servers in Cluster and 1 web and 1 mail server. OS will be windows 2016

I have been through many documents.

The plan which i will be following is 

1) I will be registering 4 additional server 

2) I will be installing and configuring Domino Server 9.0.1 FP8 on new Machine with Windows 2016. Here I do not want to upgrade design of any database.I will upgrade that later.

3) I will slowly migrate applications from current setup to new setup. 

4) Then I will put one current server in cluster with new server and will test application functionality.

5) Once everything works fine . I will decommission servers in current setup.

6) Finally there  will be only 4 servers with OS windows 2016

7) I will have to upgrade lotus notes client to upper version

 

I have two questions here:

1) In step two , How can I restrict design update of databases to upper version. I know there is notes.ini parameter for the same. need your help to know that and when should i add that while installing ne.w server.

2) I will have to make one of the server as admin server. If I just changed Admin server in the ACl of names.nsf is that fine or will I have to follow more steps and when should i make this change.

Particularly the Domino Sections...  There are many ways to skin a cat and we document a few of them....

Granted it is about upgrading to Domino 8.5.x but pretty much all principles still apply if you were going to Domino 9.0.1 FP8.

Seems like what you are planning to do is overly complex, but don't know enough detail about the reason for you planning.

Personally, if I had 6 Servers and I was consolidating them down to 4 Servers I would keep 4 existing servers....

I could first consolidate them in place...

I would then upgrade them in place one by one to 9.0.1FP8

What is your concern about design upgrades of 9.0.1 Templates?  You can always remove all templates off a Domino Server after you run the install which would certainly keep any design upgrades from happening..

There's a proper way of upgrading at a later time, but we'll save that conversation for a different time if that is what you decide to do.

I would then move the Domino servers one by one to Windows 2016 Servers .  Discussed in the Cookbook....

Are all your servers 64 Bit Domino or do you have some that you will be converting fro 32 Bit Domino to 64 Bit Domino....

My Current servers are on windows 2008 and I want to transfer them to Windows 2016 for better functionality. Because we will be having some application which will be supported on Windows 2016. 

Regarding template upgrade , just want to be more sure. anything bad should not happen because there are lot of applications which are dependent on address book.Later we will develop plan for the same.

 

I will go through this cookbook and will come back to you . If there is any difficulty.

Are these physical or virtual servers?

The reason I ask is that Prominic benchmarked Domino on Windows 2016 vs. Windows 2012, and found that Windows 2012 with Hyper V performed better than Windows 2016.  Their blog entry is from August 2016, but I would hesitate to go to 2016 all at once.
