system is windows 7 x64 clients on a windows 2008r2 network with a domino 9.0.1 mail server and notes 9.0.1 clients.  i have set a default mail policy for all users that slides in the net mail notification and also displays the new mail icon in the task bar but.on at least 2 clients, when new mail is received, the slide in notification works and the new mail icon does display but after approximately 1 - 2 minutes, the new mail icon disappears.  i have left the notes client minimized and ignored the new email, but the icon disappears on its own.  Ideas???

Need a bit more information
I've been trying to understand exactly what you've implemented here.  The way I understand, you have an org policy with Mail Settings document.  Is this accurate?  Or is it a Desktop settings instead?  From my experience, the mail notification settings are all in the Desktop settings.  I could not find any in the Mail settings doc.

Can you explain what you mean by "slides in the net mail notification"? Also, how did you implement the new mail icon display in the task bar?  Is this through a java plug-in or widget?  Is this custom, or part of the core notes/Domino product? Which fields are you working with, in the Domino policy? My apologies, I am just aware of this terminology.

Because it only happens to a couple of users, it's seems like a contributing factor to this issue is either the policy, user.id, or notes client machine.

For troubleshooting I might recommend:
a.)  take the user.id to a different machine.  Does the issue follow the user.id?
--If not, then the issue is with that particular machine, either something in the Notes client OR could be something at the OS level.  Try the other tests first, but perhaps a re-image of the machine fixes it if nothing else does.
b.)  on the current machine, create a new local names.nsf for the user, and copy in the relevant connection and location docs for home/mail server connection.
--Remove the current contacts database (local names.nsf) from the data directory.  Rename the new contacts to names.nsf and restart the Notes client.  Does the issue still occur?
c.)  remove bookmarks/desktop/cache/names.nsf from the data directory, and re-run client setup on the user's machine.  Does this resolve the issue?
d.)  run a detailed policy synopsis for one of these failing users, and also against someone who does not have the issue.  What are the differences?  Could these 2 users have multiple of the same type of policy applied (one org one explicit) which sets different items differently than other users in the company?

new mail icon

i discovered the problem.  it wasn't a problem with any of the policy settings but a windows setting.  selecting the customize setting for the windows icon notification revealed the notes new mail was set to notification only which in my view should have been adequate.  changed it to always show and notifications and all is well.
