Type-Ahead always contact server, how to avoid that

  • Category: Contacts
  • Platform: Apple Mac OS
  • Release: 9.0.1
  • Role: End User

Hi,
I noted that after typing a recipient in an email or new meeting, and after I press the coma(,) key, the Notes client contact my home server and this impact in the GUI performance.

Is there a way to avoid contact the Domino server in type-ahead?

I already tried this:

  • going to names.nsf (Contacts), Advanced, Locations, double click on the Location name, Mail, change to "Local only" the fields Recipients type-ahead" and "Mail addressing". Also, change the "Recipients name lookup" to "Exhaustively check all address books"
  • change the location to "Notes dial-up"

I can confirm that the Notes client is accessing the server after I press the coma key because in the left-lower corner of the window a "Thunderbolt" icon appears briefly. If I chang the Location to "No Connection", and message appears in the status bar that says Notes can not connect to my home server.

Any help is really appreciated. This setup is for users that work outside the office with really slow internet connections.

Thanks
Oliver

enable recent contacts
Thanks for the feedback. It was not clear from your feedback if you have enabled recent contacts preferences.
This can help to avoid connecting server as these recent contacts are stored locally for faster name look up.

Contacts > Preferences

Also recommending the location preference 'local then server', so that names on not found locally in recent contacts or my contacts would be searched on server.

recent contacts enabled

Hi Sunanda,
many thanks for your comments.

I have Recent Contacts enabled in Contacts->Preferences. Also, I have setup my Location as "Notes Direct Dial-up" and I also tried as "Local area conection".

In my location settings, I have setup "Local only" for type ahead.

I want that the Notes Client 9.0.1 FP1 does not contact the Domino server for type ahead, but the Notes client is still contacting the server and that makes the GUI client freeze.

Is there a way that Notes client does not contact the server for type ahead? Thanks

Oliver

Can not avoid connection to server

inotes typeahead ini settings
I realize your primary concern is on the notes client, but I came across these notes.ini settings to allow further configuration of the type-ahead feature in inotes full (lite in 85x) and ulite modes

Setting Applies to Description
iNotes_WA_CachedNames All modes Although this feature is on by default, you can use iNotes_WA_CachedNames=0 to disable the type-ahead feature. Values are:

0 - Disables type-ahead

1 - Enables type-ahead (default)

iNotes_WA_CachedNames_MaxNames All modes Use this setting to specify the maximum number of names stored in the cached-names list. Values can be from 1 - 200. The default value is 120.
iNotes_WA_UltralightCachedNames_MaxNames Ultra-light mode For ultra-light mode, type-ahead uses a subset of the names stored in the cached-names list. Use this setting to determine the maximum number of names in the subset. Values can be from 1 - 200, but cannot be greater than the value for iNotes_WA_CachedNames_MaxNames. The default is 60.
iNotes_WA_UltralightCachedNames_MaxNamesPerPage Ultra-light mode For ultra-light mode, sets the number of choices to show in the type-ahead list per page. Pressing the right or left arrow shows subsequent pages of names. Values can be from 1 - 200. The default is 4.

Notes client

Many thanks for the info Brandon.

I read those notes.ini options but it seems to apply only to iNotes, the webmail client.

I need to solve this issue where the Notes Client in Windows and Mac contact the user's mail server every time the user press the coma button on his keyboard while entering email addresses in the To field of an email.

It would be nice to have a Notes client configured in a way that only contact the Domino server when replicating. But I have the problem that the Notes client contact the Domino server for every typeahead lookup.

Thanks

Any solution?

From what i read seem you have local replica of the mail and addictional  remotelocal(yes remotelocal see below *) directory configured on the client.

Look in the preferences there is a field "Local address book" who contain somthing like  names.nsf; servername/certif!!filename.nsf  the last one is a reference to an address book on the server ( *even if defined as local is an dirty old trick)

http://www.alanlepofsky.net/alepofsky/alanblog.nsf/dx/additional-address-books-and-sharing-contacts

Take also a look to the names.ini entry names=..... ( i don't remember if it work also on clients).

NOTE:

the fact you have this setting on all your PC make me think this can be set from polcy so a look on the policy and settings can be a good idea.

There is other way to have ona offline  corporate address book but you must configure it correctly (aka understand what your are doing) to avoid  problem like this.

Configured like that, Notes 9.0.2 FP2

Hi Luca,
many thanks for your answer.

I have already setup Notes like that:
- we have a local replica of the Domino (global) address book
- we add all address book in the user preferences, separated by comas, using only the db name like names.nsf, domino-names.nsf, etc. This setup also create the names= in the notes.ini
- the Location is created as "notes dialup", "local area network"
- editing the location from the user address book the setups are:
  Mail file location: Local
  Recipient name type-ahead: local only
Activate recipient name type-ahead: on each character
Recipient name lookup: Exhaustively check all address books
  Mail addressing: Local only

Even that all these setting are enabled, every time you press the coma key after typing an internet email (example@example.net) a connection to the Domino server is established and is visible in Preferences, Notes Ports, Status. This problem is reproducible in Windows and Mac, using Notes 9.0.2 FP2 client.

This seems to be a bug in type ahead, since there is no way to work without connecting to the Domino server unless you setup a Location type of "no conection".

What else can I try?

Regards,
Oliver

Replicate the entire Domino Directory on the Client is not a good idea there is some sensible information on it, and can be very big if you have a lot of people.

There is other instrument for this like Directory Catalog.

Try to select the Domino Directory local replica on the workspace and try to open it  if your xACL is correctly configured probably you receive an error or you see only some part of the Directory.

Type-Ahead uses directory catalog?

Hi Luca,
So you are saying that after pressing the coma key, the Notes client tries to contact the domino server in order to check the directory catalog? I can try to use the local replica of the directory catalog but only if it will avoid the Notes client to contact the domino server every time I hit the coma key.

Can you even reproduce the issue I'm describing here? Try creating an email, type example@example.net and press the coma key, watch left in the status bad the ray icon indicating a connection to the domino server.

Regards,
Oliver
