So has anyone now after they've installed the new Notes 9 client and have Connections 4 installed, have they gotten the Social Embeded Experiences to work?  Meaning are you able to respond to a Connections post via the email you receive?  We can't and I'm wondering if there's something else we need to do?

Notes 9 Social and Connections
To enable the Embedded Experiences features the administrator has to specifically configure and enable the Connections Gadget integration including the following covered in public documentation:
-Deploy Connections 4.0 CR3
-Deploy a Domino 9.0 Server with the OpenSocial Component and Widget Catalog
-Enable by Policy OpenSocial and EE Support
-Import the Connections 4 EE and Updates Gadgets into the Catalog, sign and approve them.

This configuration is necessary to make sure Notes/Domino knows who it can trust to receive embedded experiences from.  The features of EE and OpenSocial gadget support are very powerful as far as integration and therefore have to be enabled for specific services

Have you already done all of this? Just downloading the Notes 9 SE client, without the Domino and C4 Admin enabling the functionality, will result in C4 email notifications looking just like they did in previous Connections release.

Instead of going to CR3 can I just wait until 4.5?

Yes and no
You need a Domino Server with the OpenSocial Component installed.  You don't have to go put Apache Shindig on your server yourself.  The OpenSocial Component is installed via a separate add-on installer.  Once installed, you will need to configure it per the 9.0 documentation.

RE: RE: Notes 9 Social and Connections

It depends. If you are trying to set up embedded experiences, then yes, at least one Domino server needs to be running the OpenSocial component. For a pilot deployment, this could be an existing server in your domain.
