Receiving email in rtf instead of html

  • Category: Notes Client
  • Platform: Windows
  • Release: 9.0.1
  • Role: End User

Hi,

I m bit frustrated due to receiving email in RTF instead of HTML from every user who is sending email from a particular domain ( telenor.com.pk & this domain uses MS Exchange email for its users).  All of my colleagues using same software (notes 9.0) are receiving emails in HTML (from same domain) and are not facing any issue in it. it creates more trouble when sender sends some table pasted in email body and after receiving it looks real bad and in-understandable.

Further more Other than that all emails from a number of different domains (using MS exchange, pop3, IMAP, domino etc) are being  received perfectly okay in html format for me.

I have been using notes email since last 3 years, started from version 6.5 . while using that version above problem didn't existed. but when i upgraded it to 8.5.3, i started facing this problem.

Till now I have done following troubleshooting.

1) completely remove notes 8.5 from my system and install it again and configure

2) replaced the notes email .nsf file design template from R6 to R8, and than to mail8.5,

3) completely removed notes8.5.3 and install 9.0 (currently in use)

4) replaced email .nsf design template from StdR85Mail.ntf to mail9.ntf, done same process for both online and local replica. after no improvement revert this process back.

At each point of above troubleshooting, i checked for one or two days for results but no improvement.

One point mentioning here is that whenever I sent email to any of that domain (telenor.com.pk) user, its reply from them always displayed in HTML.

Please help as I am now thinking to format my Windows and currently not willing to do this.

Thanx, Sajid

answer seem irrelevant to my case

But in my case I am receiving the attachments correctly, but all images of signature, graphs and images pasted in email body are displayed in attachments (can be viewed there) but tables are converted to simple arbitrary text and font of complete mail converted to "default Monospace"

Whereas majority of other notes user in my company are receiving those emails correctly (why is that?) also if its an issue at MS outlook config then other guys should also face same problem,

Although some other persons are also facing same issue on their PC as well but majority have no issue.

Also please note that, I dont have any problem of "winmail.dat" currently

Some other thoughts...
1) Can you confirm the message is NOT in MIME by selecting the message > go to File > Properties, does the field $NoteHasNativeMime exist? Screen shot below.

Also, check $MIMETrack field on the left (its right above $NoteHasNativeMIME per screenshot above), once you select the field, on the right pane, scroll and check if you see  "MIME - CD by....", which means the message was actually converted to NRT.

2) If the message was converted per $MIMETrack field, maybe all incoming messages are being converted to Notes Rich Text per Person document setting. Open your Domino Directory (Server Address Book), open your Person document, ensure Format preference for incoming mail: is set to Leave in Senders' Format

If it is set to Leave in Sender's Format, but it is still converting it, you will need to open up a ticket to investigate further.

3) If $NoteHasNativeMime is set to 1, and the message does not seem to be displaying correctly, in your Notes client check File > Preferences> Basic Notes Client Configuration > under Additional Options > ensure Disable Embedded Browser for MIME mail is NOT checked.

Hope this helps narrow down the issue. Thank you!

Historical RTF issues
In the MS link, you'll see that there is a way for the Outlook users to specify HTML instead of RTF as the outgoing message type. I suggest having them try doing that once, as a test, so you can narrow down which side needs to be fixed: sender end or recipient end.

Method 3: How to make a Per message change for TNEF

For Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013:

To turn off TNEF, follow these steps:

1.
Open a new mail message, or click Reply on a received message.
2.
On the Format Text tab, click HTML or Plain Text.

To turn on TNEF, follow these steps:

1.
Open a new mail message, or click Reply on a received message.
2.
On the Format Text tab, click Rich Text.

just found out that its not RTF, its plain text

May be I have done a little distraction from actual issue as I think the mail I am receiving is in plain text instead of RTF from that particular domain users.

Kindly consider this factor as well.

It sounds like your correspondent(s) may be sending a TNEF strream
You posted pictures of the Document Properties dialog, but there wasn't enough information for me to figure out what's happening.

Is there also a TNEFEvaluated item on the example document?  If so, what is its value?

Are there items beginning wth 'X'?  If so what are their values?

Can you open the example message in the Notes client, then click the View menu item, then click the Show submenu item, then click the Page Source submenu item..  (If View, Show, Page Source is greyed out, please let us know.)

Copy the page source and paste it into a document here BUT first please delete the data from any image/jpeg  parts.  For now, I'm more interested in looking at the message structure than the contents.
