Looking for suggestions on how I can avoid consistent provisioning failures when installing
IBM Notes 9.0.1 Social Edition over Lotus Notes 8.5.3 FP4 SHF39. Any tips or tricks would
be greatly appreciated!

Feature states:

   ┌───[–] Notes Client
   │    ├───[A] Notes Browser Plug-in
   │    ├───[A] Client Help Files
│    ├───[A] Domino Enterprise Connection Services
   │    ├───[A] Spell Checker
   │    ├───[X] Migration Tools
   │    │    ├───[X] Exchange Migration
   │    │    └───[X] Outlook Express Migration
│    └───[X] Client Single Logon Feature

   ├───[A] Feed Reader
   ├───[A] OpenSocial component
   └───[A] Sametime (integrated)

[A] Run all from my computer

The install was started from elevated command prompt with this command:

   msiexec /I "C:\Install\NotesSocialEdition_9-01-13294\IBM Notes 9.0.1 Social
   Edition.msi" /L*V C:\Logs\NotesSocialEdition_9-01-13924_Install.log
   ALLUSERS=2 SETMULTIUSER=1

Install failed. An IBM Notes 9.0.1 Social Edition warning dialog reported this information:

   Installation and setup error occurred.

Unexpected results have occurred during the provisioning operation.

For additional information, please refer to the logs:
   C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Lotus\Notes\Data\workspace\logs

The install failed with error 1603 (fatal error occurred during installation). The Windows
Installer log contained these messages:

   CustomAction RunProvisioning.5F3129E8_3AD4_4346_AEE6_A314E2DE64D9 returned
actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation
      happened inside sandbox)

Action ended 12:59:17: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.

two severe errors:

I saw conflicts in trace log like conflicts with another request for the same feature which I guess Notes 9.01 contains a same feature with SHF39.

Workaround:

1. Uninstall SHF39 first before installing Notes 9.01

2. Uninstall Lotus Notes 8.5.3 FP4 SHF39 and clean install Notes 9.01

And we need to know some details about SHF39. When and Where customer get it and begin to deploy it, then we could check if the issue was resolved in the following HFs.

IBM Notes 9.0.1 Social Edition
Hello Wei. Thank you for responding.

I've already tested your suggested workaround. Notes 9.0.1 Social Edition will install successfully once Notes 8.5.3 FP4 SHF39 has been removed. My testing removed the previous version with the Notes Install Cleanup Executable (NICE) utility. However, to minimize user impact, we wish to upgrade from our current Notes platform.

When and where did we receive SHF39?

Searching the web for the name of the installation source finds it mentioned here:

Interim Fix 1 for IBM Notes 8.5.3 Fix Pack 4 (8.5.3.4)

Midway on this page, in the section labeled Fix & Download Information, you can click 853FP4SHF39_W32_standard.exe. This action will take you to a Select fixes page that reports this file was made available on May 14, 2013. This date fits nicely with our internal request for this fix that was submitted on May 23, 2013. So that's roughly when we received this file but, as of this writing, I don't know where it was obtained from. I would assume some IBM web page but that's just speculation on my part.

Per log snippet in the doc, I have few questions as below.

1. Have you ever installed Connection Plug-ins or other plug-ins ?

as Connection Plug-ins also contains bizcard feature, it may cause conflict with Notes 9.0.1

2. If you did install Connection Plug-ins before, could you uncheck IBM Connection before upgrading to Notes 9.0.1 to take another try ?

3. If you didn't install Connection Plug-ins , could you please provide verbose logs e.g. in below places ?

Logs in Install directory : C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\Notes\framework\rcp\deploy\*
Logs in Data directory :  C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\Notes\Data\workspace\logs\*

A Workaround
Heh. Funny you should mention those Connection plug-ins. I browsed the Uninstall key (32-bit hive) on my virtual machine this morning and found these two products: IBM Connections 3.0.1 Files Plug-in for Lotus Notes and IBM Connections 3.01 Status Updates Plug-in for Lotus Notes.

So I scripted an uninstall for these two items before the IBM Notes 9.0.1 Social Edition install is launched and — voilà! — the result was sweet install success. And it appears this resolution is acceptable in light of upcoming upgrades. Still would like to understand the interplay between those provisioning objects and where those definitions originate ...

where is the DICE tool?

Would be NICE to have a DICE tool as well for addressing Domino install/upgrades gone bad.
