Is this really true?!? Domino Administrator

From time to time I need to split huge mail archive to two NSF's. First step is (from Domino Administrator client) File > Application > New Copy so that new copy is created on the SAME Domino server. Then, from actual archive I would delete all mails that are in the new copy. After that, user have free archive and another one as old archive. This is done because archive NSF is too large and working in it is too annoying.

But today my network admin ask me why my local machine generates so many data... So New Copy via Domino Administrator on the SAME Domino server is going through my workstation! All data packages are going through me then back to server. Also, if new copy is performed to another Domino server, data still shouldn't go through my workstation. Plus local network between workstation and servers are 100 Mbps, and between servers is 10 Gbps so you can imagine how long it would be to copy 30 GB of data.

Can this be avoided and can someone confirm that Domino Administrator is really that poorly designed? Domino Administrator 9.0.1 FP10 IF02.

Yes.

It's a client to a client-server application.

Still, there are tradeoffs to what you're stating. You're complaining because of your network topology. But consider what happens when your servers are firewalled against one another. Or if they're access controlled against one another.

If you want to do what you're stating, that's also not particularly hard. It's a run-on-server agent that copies all files. And you ... run it on the server.

So: you have both options.

 

Aside, the Administrator is capable of moving databases onserver. That's a function that's inaccessible to the other clients as far as I know.

@Mike Woolsey: It would be a too complex programming task for DA to send above (example) command to a Domino server :) This particular problem doesn't have anything with network topology. Every modern administrator client software doesn't care about your local workstation - he is using your workstation only to sends commands to the servers. So once that you issued some command that command is performed on the server(s), you can close your client or shut down workstation or loose power :) We are in '18, but not in 1918 :)

With dedicated archive servers running Transaction Logging and DAOS, the archive database should not be that big. Further creating an agent to copy the documents periodically is also no problem and this one runs in the backend on the server. Administrative actions from the Notes Client are done with the permissions of your Notes ID and only your local Notes Client has access to this ID.
