I have not seen documentation that describes the ability of version 9.0 and 8.5.3 servers and clients to co-exist.

  1. In general, can Domino 8.5.3 and 9.0 servers co-exist if the design of the standard databases has been upgraded to 9.0 designs due to the upgrade of one Domino server from 8.5.3 to 9.0?
  2. Can a Domino 8.5.3 server host a 9.0 directory?
  3. Can a Notes 8.5.3 client open a 9.0 mail database?

Yes, yes and yes.
In our Notes Development Domain I have Domino Servers running 6.5.6FP3 (1), 7.0.4FP2 (1), 8.0.2FP6, 8.5.3FP4 (30+), 9.0 (30+) all running with Domino 9.0 Directory Design....   Being accessed by a variety of Notes Clients (8.5x and 9.x) and iNotes Users...

If you find any problems, I would be very interested in knowing about them...  I am not aware of any....
