There is not a maximum size for the log.nsf, but once teh file gets over a couple of GB's, you may see issues with the server performance. You can also stop the server, rename the log file, and then restart the server to recreate the log.nsf. The % denots "Free Space" in the log file.

You would enable archiving under Database Properties > Archive Settings, and then can create a program document with compact log.nsf -A to archive on a nightly schedule.
