Server upgrade - suggestions wanted

Hi,

We have 3 Domino servers, 2 as mail role (in a fail-over cluster).  One is Domino 7.0 and the other 9.0 (with Traveler).  Want to upgrade the 7.0 server and it is the administration server.  The 2 mail servers are running on VMWare host servers.  The existing Domino 7 mail server is on 32 bit W2003 so it cannot be in an-place upgrade.  We will build a W2008R2 64 bit as a new install.

Is there any way that I can prep the new server and then one evening move the mailboxes over to the new server?  Because I need to end up with the same Domino name for the server (it was our main mail server so incoming mail uses that host name etc), it seems to me that I cannot do most of the install until the other server is shut down (as far as Domino services).

- I had wondered if I could "sandbox" the server in VMWare or have it on a different subnet but the other IT guy here says that the new server has to be able to contact an old server (which makes sense as it will have to get the Domino directory etc)

- I had wondered about prepping the server with a different Domino name and then renaming it at cut-over time (erase the notes. ini file to trigger renaming?)

It seems to me that many others must go through this - wanting to upgrade a server but keep the same Domino name and wanting to do as much as possible before the evening/weekend cutover.  And reminder that this server is the administration server.

Thanks for any advice.

Albert

P.S.  I am an "experienced" Domino administrator but don't do a lot of installs so hence the questions!

On the right track - My opinion
In my opinion, you are definitely on the right track with your thought process.  There are several ways to accomplish this end goal.

My preference (and this may differ from other folks out there):
--Install a new Domino server (I prefer a secondary server in the same domain - not a standalone in a different, new domain)
--move all the data over to it.  You can either use replication OR you can OS copy the data, depending on how soon after the install you will switch.
--Make sure you also move over any kry files, all cert.ids, certlog database, and all system databases are up and running on the new server.
--get the new server fully functional.  If the new server is replicating with the old one (even 1 direction), then all the dbs can stay up to date. Meaning less work at the time of the switchover.
--when ready: swap the ip address, server.id, notes.ini, and start this new server as the old one.

Gotchas:  This does not apply to you, but if this was a 8.5x --> 9.x upgrade, and the 8.5x system was running DAOS, you have to know if your nlos are encrypted are not.  If they are, then there are a few other steps to do in the process.  But DAOS doesn't exist in 7.x, so we don't have to worry about that.

These are also helpful documents in this area, with more explicit steps:

replace data folder

In cases like this I have successfully run a new 64bit Domino install on the new box WITHOUT launching the server.

Then just deleted the data folder on the new box and replaced with the complete old data folder from the old box as well as the notes.ini file.

Then launched the 64bit server on the new box - that then comes alive as being the old one except now it's on the new box and the 64bit binaries.

Further questions on upgrade suggestions...

Hi,

Thank you both.  Some specific questions for Amy.  See questions interspersed below:

--Install a new Domino server (I prefer a secondary server in the same domain - not a standalone in a different, new domain)

I would assume with a new "temp" name e.g. "MailTemp"

--move all the data over to it.  You can either use replication OR you can OS copy the data, depending on how soon after the install you will switch.

One of the linked documents said to use ftp because of possible corruption if moving between OS's (perhaps they mean from a Windows to Linux etc, not so much something like W2003 to W2008 or 2010?)

--Make sure you also move over any kry files, all cert.ids, certlog database, and all system databases are up and running on the new server.

what other "system databases"?  I assume Admin4.nsf as we already replicate that

--get the new server fully functional.  If the new server is replicating with the old one (even 1 direction), then all the dbs can stay up to date. Meaning less work at the time of the switchover.

One of the documents mentioned doing some configuration for http binding (whatever that is) but it would seem to me that with the newer releases, http should be enabled by default, right?

--when ready: swap the ip address, server.id, notes.ini, and start this new server as the old one.

Just for my understanding: I assume that Domino picks up the Domino server name from either the notes.ini or the server.id file so that when these are moved and the server started it comes alive with the old server name?  Just wondering.

Auto emails when replied to?

Second question: is there way to have an auto-email go back to my inbox when someone responds to one of my threads?  thanks.

Results of server upgrade

Hi all,

I thought I would add in some "post-migration" comments in case someone else comes across this post.

We ran into a major glitch part way through.  Here is what we did simplified:

1) set up new server "MailTemp" which was our "temporary" new server with Dom 9 on it; it would later be renamed to "Mail"

2) we enabled DAOS on the new server and replicated all the mail files over to it

3) with DAOS enabled, as the messages moved over to the new server, the attachments were removed and stored in DAOS

4) after the final replication (and stopping mail moving about the domain), we took the old server off line and renamed the new server to the old server's name (we wanted to do this to avoid having to make other changes external to our company)

5) when we fired up the new server under the original name, we could not open any attachments stored in DAOS

- those who know more than me will recognize the problem immediately - the DAOS attachments were encyrpted with the new server ID of "MailTemp" and so once we switched back to using the original server ID, it could no longer open the attachments.

So we had to start over late at night when we thought we should have been done.

- what we should have done is one of these methods:

A) use OS copy to copy the mail files over onto the new server then rename the server and open them; leave DAOS off so no extraction of attachments happens or

b) leave DAOS turned off and replicate all the mail files if we really wanted to go that route; once the cut-over is done and then the server renamed, turn DAOS on and use "compact" with some switches to get DAOS going on each mail file

Amy Knox (in this thread) was probably hinting at this problem when she put in the note about upgrading from 8.5 to 9.0 but I did not think it applied to us so I did not dig further.  If she sees this posting and is able to provide a better workaround, that would be great!

Thanks,

Albert Gostick
