We've set up a remote server to have something in place if the main server cluster is unreachable. Users' home server for mail is one of the cluster servers. Replicas of mail files and other critical databases created on the remote server.

Question: If mail is routed via the remote server when the cluster is unreachable, will it be delivered to the mail files locally or wait for delivery to the home server?

Thanks.

mail cluster failover

Mail routing fails over if the recipient's mail server is not available when the router attempts to deliver the mail. As long as the mail server is in a cluster, the router delivers the mail to another cluster server that contains a replica of the recipient's mail database. Thus, the recipient continues to receive mail.

Cluster required?
So I'm hearing I would need to add the remote server to the cluster? I was trying to avoid that just to minimize traffic and load since, in normal operation, there's no need for the remote server to update the mail files in real time. I've got it replicating only during off hours now.

cluster real time

The way you described it I thought all of the servers were cluster members already.  you can add the server to the cluster and disable cluster replication so that is does not update in real time, DISABLE_CLUSTER_REPLICATOR=1
