Notes 9 Slow Performance

  • Category: Notes Client
  • Platform: Windows
  • Release: 9.0
  • Role: Administrator,Developer,End User
  • Tags: performance,task switch,slow response

I have upgraded my Notes/Admin/Designer client from 8.5.3FP2SHF151 to 9.0.  Unfortunately, the client now "hangs" at very frequent intervals.

It can be performing any task, i.e. a simple mouse click; switching to another open application; editing a document; page up/down in a document list; refreshing a view etc...

I have renamed the "workspace" then restarted the client, but the problem still remains (I have since put the workspace back, as I have some widgets installed).  I have also tweaked the "jvm.properties" file, to give me 1GB of total memory available, but this does not help.

Questions:

  1. Does anyone have this same problem?
  2. Is there a recommended installation method?  E.g. should a complete uninstall of any previous versions be performed, before installation of 9.0?

My machine is an HP Elitebook 8560p with core i5 processor and 8GB RAM, running Window 7 Pro.

RE: Notes 9 Slow Performance

Hi,

For administration & development we used the 8.5.3FP3 before. Now on the same workstations and with same OS we experience the release version of 9.0 to be slower than the beta 9.0 version but faster than the 8.5.3FP3.

On some of the workstations we have the client crashing without any warning or error and on others it runs stable.

We've been testing v9 since the rollout of the beta and most of us are dissatisfied with the performance and stability of the v9.0 Release

Do you have any nsd files from the Notes Client Crashes?
Are you running against Domino 9.0 Servers yet?

RE: RE: Notes 9 Slow Performance

The client has never crashed, it just hangs (sometimes up to a minute) in almost every action I perform.

We are not running it against any Domino 9 servers yet.  However, because Domino/Notes is a client/server based installation, the version of the client does not matter.  In any case, the behaviour of the client  occurs when I simply right click the mouse; scroll through a list of documents; task swap any open tabs etc...  The server is not even connected to, when the issue happens.

It is not an A/V issue, we use ESET Nod32.

Windows resource monitor does not show any unusual high activity.

I have uninstalled 9.0 and reinstalled 8.5.3 c/w FP3, because the new version is simply unworkable and I haven't got the time at the moment to investigate further.

Collect IBM Notes Diagnostic Data and leave Notes Running
from Program Start, choose Collect IBM Notes diagnostic data and leave Notes running

Do this when you see the slow downs....

You should open a PMR with IBM Support and send them several sets of information.

@Mansell, I'm experincing the same issue. I just recently killed Notes for the third or fourth time today. Have you been able to resolve your problem? If so, how?

@Paganetti, I've run the utility you suggested multiple times, but exactly what files need to be sent?  The window closes too quickly after the util completes for me to read it.

Thanks in advance.

Files to collect
I'm told you get a single nsd (with 2 dumps) in the "IBM TECHNICAL SUPPORT" directory and 2 Javacores in the workspace/logs directory

In my validation of this I did get the nsd in the IBM_TECHNICAL_SUPPORT directory, but did not get any Javacores in the workspace/logs directory.  I'll work with Dev to see why I didn't get any Javacores...

Let me know if the files are getting generated for you.

Yes John, I'm getting the two JAVACORE files in the workspace\logs directory.  I've opened a ticket with IBM and sent the files to see if they can give me any insight or resolution.  Thanks

RE: Notes 9 Slow Performance

I have since several months the same problem. I have installed the 9.0.1 version without any better results. Every Minute when Biotes gain focus, Notes dont react on The mouse and the keyboard events. I have to swirtch back to another application and then tio Notes. In average 2 to 4 times and this almost every time Notes gains focus.

I have even remove the AV Software. I have Windows 8.1 32 Bit with the latest updates. If you want more détails you can sed me a mail to ih@picosoft.biz.

After 15 Minutes..

BUT I THINK i have found a solution: My AV Symantec has a Notes Hook (NSF_HOOKS=NLNVP.DLL in notes.ini). I removed this line manually and then i observed a much better IBM Notes Client. I dont have the problem.

Re: Notes 9 Slow Performance

Hi, I got the same issue after going to notes 9.0 . The only work around is to

1. clear up cache file (cache.ndk)
2. clear up bookmark file (bookmark.nsf)
3. remove workspace folder.

from notes/data folder.

After using it for a month, the slowness and crashes started again and I have to do the house cleaning job again :)

RE: Notes 9 Slow Performance

We are having this issue with some of our user's workstations.  Has anyone come up with a solution to this problem yet?  We are running Domino 9.0.1 servers and Notes 9.0.1 clients.  This issue was not occurring when our users were running Notes 8.5.4 clients on the Domino 9.0.1 server.  It only seems to appear once we have upgraded them to Notes 9.0.1 and only for a handful of users.

We tried starting Notes with the following command line options -> notes.exe -RPARAMS - resetconfig -clean, to clean the workspace and plugins and clear the cache but that doesn't seem to have any effect.

RE: Notes 9 Slow Performance

I have been struggling with this issue for over 3 months.  Only affecting 1 user.  I have tried everything i can think of as far as DB maintenance and deleting cache, bookmark, re-installing etc.  Have contacted tech support, but really tech support is not what it used to be.  It seems like they are outsourced support from India reading from a tech support FAQ.

Using Notes Basic seemed to have helped with the problems, but that is not a long term solution.

The only thing I have not tried is to completely wipe PC and re-install everything.

RE: Notes 9 Slow Performance

Hi,  We've been having similar issues but the issue affects EVERY computer on our network.  We see the slowness and hangs every time an employee switches from a wired connection to a wireless connection.   If notes stays open during the switch then every action takes about 30 seconds to a minute to complete.  (Opening mail file, opening database, opening a local database, etc)  I have been back and forth with L3 support now for 4 months and they have no clue what they are doing.   It's not just a windows PC issue either,  the same thing happens on the MacBook and has been happening since Notes 8.5 as I have found this forum post from another user who has the same issue we do. Has anyone seen this or can anyone test this in their environment to see if they can reproduce the issue.  Or maybe this is the whole issue you are seeing?   If we close Notes down and re-open it after switching the network connection,  then the issue does go away,  but in all honesty,  it should work better than it does to recognize when a PC goes from wireless to wired.

Same slow issue with Notes 9.0.1 client

We are having the same problem as well with Lotus Notes 9.0.1.  Notes client can take 30 seconds or more to re-establish a connection to the Domino server each time.

When I do something like opening a database on the server it can take 30 seconds for it to establish a connection to the server and open the database.  What I have found is when I click to open a database I hit Ctrl + Break on the keyboard which immediately stops the opening of the database.  I then immediately try opening the database again and it opens straight away without any delay.

My guess is there is something in the Notes client that has gone stale (such as trying to re-use a connection that is no longer valid, or some hung thread) and hitting Ctrl + Break either kills this or resets it.  The client is then immediately responsive with server connectivity.   After a minute or two the client goes back to the 30 second delay but hitting Ctrl + Break again re-establishes the fast connection.

Notes 9 Slow Performance

One solution to the constant pausing issue is to run the program as an administrator. (Right click on the launch icon > properties > compatibility > tick the "run as Administrator" box.)

Whilst this fixes the random pausing and crashing, you do loose the ability to see network/shared drives when attaching files to outgoing emails.
