Any reason not to install OpenSocial?  Like, if you have multiple Domino
servers and some are 'special purpose' (like smtp only for example)?

I opened up a ticket and got a nice reply which basically said:

OpenSocial component supports embedded experiences features
The OpenSocial component provides social and web features to make third-party processes available directly in the client user's mail. The OpenSocial component supports:

  • iNotes® Widgets and LiveText
  • OpenSocial 2.0 Gadgets in the sidebar, pop-ups, and anywhere Notes and iNotes previously made widgets available
  • Embedded experiences in Notes and iNotes

It is not required if you do not want to have those additional feature available on you server.

If you would like to have it installed please follow this TN:

It won't hurt anything
Robert, if you install the OpenSocial Component on your server but don't configure Widgets and Live Text for iNotes or enable OpenSocial gadget rendering than the code will sit on your server idly.  The code does not get used unless you setup either (or both) of these features.  If you have no plans to use these features than I see no reason to install it.  You can learn more about what you can do with OpenSocial in Notes and iNotes by watching the videos here.  If you want to learn more about how to configure the OpenSocial component read the OpenSocial Component Cookbook.
