When is the LDAP task really needed?

The LDAP task is enabled by default on the Domino server.   But, the question is why?     As far as I can tell, all the normal Domino features work fine whether LDAP is loaded or not.

Just curious, except for external apps that may need to access the Domino directory via LDAP why would it be needed ?

Are there any Domino features that break if  LDAP is disabled?

LDAP

LSAP is only required if your are attempting to use some form of lookup between Domino and an external program, such as Active Directory for example.

That's what I thought

Thanks for the responses.  Seems like a waste of resources,  but because it's enabled by default (and there's quite a bit of admin documentation about it) always had a nagging thought that maybe it was actually needed for something related to the core Domino processes.
