OK, so I am confused as to what all of the "pieces" are exactly for this new "platform". I understand that everything starts with Domino 9. What does adding in the "OpenSocial" component "give"/allow you to do? Do you need to also deploy Lotus Connections as well?

So really, if you deploy Domino 9, are you getting nothing really new with this "social" edition?

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but the documentation / etc is lacking I think.

What you get with Notes 9 SE
Notes 9 Social Edition.. is a continuation of Notes being both a PIM tool(Mail, Calendar, Contacts) and a Platform.
Notes 9 improves the Mail/PIM experience with things like improved QuickFind, and platform features like Widgets and LiveText, which is now on by default, and available in iNotes.
So giving you a full feature list of Notes 9 Social Edition is beyong the scope of my response here....

In the near future you will see IBM products such as IBM Forms enabling workflow processes via Embedded Experiences, and then other portions of the

You are correct that deploying the OpenSocial Component, without any gadgets to use the new capabilities, is a NO-op.  It'a all bout the applications(and now Gadgets) that extend Notes to make it more powerful.   Keep in mind that Notes/Domino customers now have an entitlement for a portion of Connections 4 functionality.
