Hello,

We have a server with no mailbox or application. this server was running idle for the past 18 months, when we try to decommission this server, we could see many users notes sessions in that server. While we run the activity analysis, we could see all the users were accessing the Catalog.nsf db. How do I find the reason behind this and how to eliminate this.

Also, no users were not registered with this server as their mail server.

Regards,

Vignesh

My guess is many users using that server as a Catalog/domain search server:
When you look at Notes Client location records under the Servers tab there is a spot to enter the Catalog/domain search server:  Maybe at one point in time that servers function was as a Domain Catalog?

That's all that comes to the top of my head right away.

User trying to open a database...

I've seen this as well - I believe it can also come from a user trying to open a database from either a doclink, bookmark or workspace icon, where the server/database no longer exists. The user's client then starts searching the catalog.nsf (if it exists) for every server in the domain for the database.

If that's the only activity that you see on the server I'd say it's safe to decommission.

Check if the desktop setting has been configured under a policy

If all users are configured to use the server as a catalog/domain server, then I would suspect that this has been configured through a policy. This would be under Desktop, the Basics tab, under Server Options as Catalog/Domain Search server.
