While installing the Notes client and Domino on the same machine is not supported it appears to be quite common.

What problems have you experienced with the Notes client and Domino installed on the same machine?

I have seen some environments run into the problem updating the JVM described in following Technote:

The biggest issue you can hit is corrupting the database
Someone not knowing the risks, will often do something stupid like accessing a nsf located in the server folder at the same time as the server and lead to corruption which they may not notice straight away.  Notes is not built as a file share database.

Definitely not a supported configuration to have Domino server & client on same machine.

Maybe "ok" for a test server but not on production

For starters the notes client can crash the server ( if notes crashes )

Launching notes from domino directory mean they share the  same data directory
and memory space .
