Use Internet mail with same domain as Domino

Hello,

I have a Domino server set up with a domain called e.g. acme.co.uk on the Domino server.

We have some users registered in the NAB and they don't have mailbox, they are using the same domain @acme.co.uk but when I try sending mails from the server to these users I get the following error "Recipient's Domino Directory entry does not specify a valid Notes mail file"

So I know that we have worked around this on another server by using the "Forwarding address" field so we have the mail address in both Internet and Forward address but then the server returns a "Maximum forwarding loop count exceeded."

I can send to other users in the NAB that has another internet domain - so my thought is that because they are trying to send mails out from the Domino server with the same internet mail domain the server just loops the mails internally.

The correct SMTP relay host is set and I have tried using a Global Domain but without any luck.

So if anyone have any suggestions that would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Can be done but...

If you want to use the same name space you will need a transition Domino domain. So you'll need to build another Domino server.  I do the same thing when customers migrate off Domino for email.  This is by no means a complete to do list...

Create a new Domino server in a new domain called NEWMAIL and configure directory assistance with your existing Domino directory.

Create a global domain doc in the new domain and copy the details from your existing Domino domain.

Create a config doc and set the field Local Internet domain smart host to the SMTP relay of your new mail service.

Then person docs for new mail service users will be:

Mail system = Other Internet Mail

Domain = NEWMAIL

Forwarding address = fred.blogs@acme.co.uk

Internet address = fred.blogs@acme.co.uk

This is of course assuming that your MX is pointing to Domino and your SMTP relay for the new service won't simply route to your MX.

They are using IBM Verse in Cloud

Thanks for the reply and the detailed description - much appreciated Porter!

I just learned that the mail client they are using are IBM Verse in the Cloud, do you by any chance now if in my scenario would be possible to configure the Domino server to send mails to?

I will keep in mind the fact that we might need to create a new Domino server.

Errr.....

Are you using a Verse hybrid config?  If you are then you won't need a second Domino server and you can just extend your existing Domino environment by synchronizing the directory with the Verse tenant. But if it's currently working then I would've thought it was already setup.

Found the solution

We found the solution to the problem.

Simply by changing the FQHN on the Domino server from development.acme.co.uk to development.test.acme.co.uk it worked.

It seems like the Domino server uses the FQHN name to somehow route mails, so by making that different it started sending mails out.

Thanks for the help Porter.
