Mixing Notes 8.5 and 9.0.1 Roaming - supported?

Wanted to know if it's supported and more importantly if it works to have a roaming user access Domino via a Notes v9.0.1 client on one machine and then use an v8.5.3 client on a different machine or in Citrix.

Will this work and are there any gotcha's or things that definitely don't work? I know a 8.5 client can't read a v9 desktop8 file so is this a show stopper?

The roaming files will have been created first either by moving a user with an existing v8.5.3 client to roaming (so created using local 8.5 templates) or by being registered as roaming and the files being created on the sever first, where they are v9.0.1 templates.

Roaming Users

Since both 8.5.3 and 9.0.1 are supported, it should be no problem for a roaming user to log in with either version of client.  Roaming is handled by the server, and the client version should not matter.

works

I do this. Don't know if it is officially supported, but it works. Since files like names.nsf and bookmark.nsf are passed around between workstations, keep in mind that you can end up with something like a local names.nsf built on a v9 template being used on a v8.5 client, or vice-versa. Hasn't caused any problems that we have noticed so far. Also, it seems theoretically possible that you could get in trouble with ODS versions of these files, but that hasn't happened to us.

good luck!

Re: Mixing Notes 8.5 and 9.0.1 Roaming - supported?
Hello Stuart!

Just asking your question: Yes, it is supported.

In roaming profiles, whenever uploading or pulling down of databases is on place, expect that there is no template modification (either upgrade or downgrade). If the templates are in version 8.5.3 it will still be at 8.5.3 during roaming processes.

To be able to run the databases on both 8.5 and 9.0 series. Make sure that all templates (mail template and names.nsf template) are in version 8.5 series. This is to avoid conflicts using 9.0 template on and 8.5.x notes client.

In your case, I believe that the key point of an unsupported environment is related to Citrix version.

See below additional information about Citrix versions supported and related Notes client:

I hope it helps!

Best Regards!
