Is this true that we actually need another Domino server running something called "Shindig"?

Yes and no
You need a Domino Server with the OpenSocial Component installed.  You don't have to go put Apache Shindig on your server yourself.  The OpenSocial Component is installed via a separate add-on installer.  Once installed, you will need to configure it per the 9.0 documentation.

It depends. If you are trying to set up embedded experiences, then yes, at least one Domino server needs to be running the OpenSocial component. For a pilot deployment, this could be an existing server in your domain.
