Notes freezing on PCs with SSDs as system drive

Hi all

First post here, need some assistance.

I am new to Notes as of ~2 months ago and have been learning it on the fly.

My role here is 1st tier support for about 1300 users.

Anyway, to the point, we are in the process of upgrading PCs and some users are reporting hangups and freezes in Notes after its been on for awhile.

At first this was only with the Domino Admin install, but then yesterday I added an end-user to the list, I'm at 6 and counting, including myself.

The common denominator here is the new systems have an SSD as the system drive, and I did not have any problems with notes until yesterday when I swapped in an SSD to my PC.

There does not appear to be any reason for the hangs, and most of the time the program does not crash, just loses functionality until restarted.

I have tried running notes with the -rparams -clean tags and that helped for about a day. Late yesterday I installed FP5 on mine and my supervisors PCs, so I will see what happens with that.

What should I try next? Asking here is my next step, so hopefully someone can help me out.

Thanks

Re: Notes freezing on PCs with SSDs as system drive
Hello Chris!

It is strange that a SSD as system drive can cause a hang on Notes.
I am using a Macbook Pro (with SSD as System Drive) for at least 06 months and I didn't face issues related to SSD.
Some of my colleagues are using a PC running Windows 10 with SSD too and none reported issues.

What OS and Notes version are you using?

Best Regards!

Notes freezing on PCs with SSDs as system drive

Thanks for the reply Rodrigo.

I am not saying the SSD is the cause of the problem, it is simply the common piece of the puzzle between systems, and like I had stated, I did not have issues until I swapped one into my PC.

We run Windows 7 Professional and use a combination of Notes 8.5 and 9.01. As we go through our refresh, everyone is getting moved to 9.01.

I am not sure if FP5 is being deployed on the new PCs, I am thinking not as my supervisors PC is new and he did not have FP5 installed until I did it last night.

Thanks for the update Chris!

Just to have another piece of the puzzle, please let me know if you identified any action that is causing the hang.
It is after the user put his/her password?
It is after send an email?
Etc?

Best Regards!

We've run into similar freezes & shudders.

They began occurring in standard Notes after installing FP6IF6 to 8.5.3.

The biggest thing I've observed is that the workspace quits responding to mouse clicks. Other tabs seem fine, but specifically the workspace collapses.

The issues below had existed prior to this fixpack as well. But something seems delayed in the startup, and it's aggravating them

The user policy settings seem to be delayed in being retrieved from the home server, and while those policy settings are being retrieved, Notes seems to risk crashing or freezing completely when you attempt certain menu items from the desktop. It's hard to be specific, but trying to get an application's database properties; launch an agent without opening the database (to another window); copy a database.

It seems much more often, the bookmark.nsf is corrupted. I have been shutting down Notes and watching it roll off task manager's process list since ND7, before I log out. But now that's no assurance that bookmark.nsf is uncorrupted. In most cases, the Notes splash screen remains in "Loading... Please wait" and the progress bar cycles three or more times without loading Notes. If I kill Notes processes, then run nfixup -V -Q bookmark.nsf, the issue disappears.

Notes freezing on PCs with SSDs as system drive

For one user it is when she opens her calendar, she does not keep it open normally, and it occasionally hangs opening her calendar.

The first user that this happened with, it doesn't appear to happen during any specific task, just hands and or freezes after being on for awhile, this problem persists after a reinstall of the client as well.

For myself and others, it happens with sending emails, composing the email poses no problems, but as soon as the send button is clicked, it hangs there and Notes as a whole is unusable until the message sends.

Mike, Are you saying my issues might reside in the bookmarks.nsf file? Where is this located, would it be worth a shot to delete to clean it up and a new one would come from the server, correct?

Open a PMR with IBM Support...
I'm sure they will want you to take nsd's (Notes System Diagnostics) when the hangs occur and send in the information collected...

sure, you can rename bookmark.nsf & it'll re-create itself.

User would lose any additions to the "Open" button, and any customizations to the toolbars (they'd be re-created, standard).

I'd speculate: it could solve the issue with the user "just freezing after awhile".

On the emailing -- it may well be that the network is unhappy or slow to respond to the emailing request.

It's possible to set up Notes to save emails to a local "mail.box" or outbox, and then Notes will route the rest of the way in background. Users need a bit of a warning if you reconfigure this, because you could shut down Notes with bigger emails sitting in the outbox, and they won't route 'til Notes is relaunched.

How do I open a PMR?

John

Excuse my newness, but what is a PMR and how do I open one?

And how do I get a Notes System Diagnostics file to send to them?

Thanks.

can't be ssd <->Notes issue

I've been running for sometime now on multiple machines SSD and notes.... no problems. (one is even a raid 0)

I would lean toward power management / driver issues...

not blaming SSDs anymore

I have eliminated power saving features as being an issue, our PCs are set to stay on all the time, unless its a laptop that is on battery power, and all the affected units are desktops.

What kind of drivers issues might be causing this on one machine but not another?

All machines here are using Intel integrated graphics, but again, not all machines are experiencing issues.

Compare

Do you  have 2 same pc one that has no issue and one that has issues?   This would be a good start.  Nvida video drivers has  issues in the past so perhaps this might a good place to start

Re: Compare

Barry,

That's a good thought, but the PCs are all identical in every way, we mass order from Lenovo.

The only difference is the user that is logged in, no connection differences even, all directly wired in to the network.

I just deployed 901FP5SHF237_W32_standard on my PC on Friday, gave it to my supervisors PC this morning. I will wait and hear what it does for him as he more closely resembles the user with the issues.

swap pc

If they are identical then lets see if the problem travels with the user.  Swap the pc and the users data directory.  If issue remains then the issue is at the user level.

Re: swap PC

The user has only had this particular PC for a couple weeks, she had zero issues with her previous PC, would a PC swap show anything?

Would deleting the local Notes data for the user accomplish the same thing?

Also what about the users profile could be causing something like this, as this is not a single user issue, and it seems to be slowly spreading.

well

Yes deleting workspace and cache.ndk would be a good start but I really wanted to see if the issue roamed to the pc that was good.   Is it only Notes that is the issue?   Are you using windows roaming profile?

Re: well

My issue with swapping PCs lies in that the only options to swap in are the older units that don't have issues.

I could maybe see if she switch work areas with someone else that has a new PC, but I don't see that happening, especially being as testing takes a day or more because the issue takes that long to surface.

Yes, it is only Notes that is causing problems on the new PCs.

Yes, we use roaming profiles, but Notes has to be set up on every PC the user logs into as it keeps the settings in the Local profile, not Roaming.

done

Just to let everyone know, Fix Pack 5 IF 237 (or whatever its called, the latest one) fixed the problems for all users.

Thank you to all who tried helping.
