Email causes Notes to abruptly shudown

I received an email directly from the internet (its from a reputable sender) that appears to be damaged. I tried to delete it and as soon as I highlighted the email, it caused Notes to quit responding and go into diagnostic mode.  It quits responding so fast that it not possible to select delete fast enough.  I am not interested in retrieving or reading it, I just want to delete it, any suggestions as to how?

Thanks

something to try
Sometimes we do get Internet messages with MIME that doesn't convert so well.    Your particular crash situation might be because when you select the document it's trying to load the doc's contents in the preview pane.    Try clicking the Open button on the Notes client's tab bar and immediately start typing HOME.  In the list of results that is displayed, select the one titled simply "Home" and click it.   The default Home page on my Notes clients shows my mail but does not have a preview pane and that may give you the chance you need to select the message without a crash occurring.

Before you delete it though, and if you're able to select the message, it would be great if you could create a new, empty database and copy and paste that note into it.   After that you could send it to IBM Support so we could prevent the crash happening in the future.

Either way, please post back here and let us know if that was successful or not.

Good luck!

Email causes Notes to abruptly shutdown

Josh,

I tried to do what you suggested but the moment I highlight it, it cause Notes to close.  This happens whether I click on or cursor down to it.

Have you tried this?
From the Workspace, Keeping the Ctrl and Alt keys pressed, double click on the mail database icon. this will open up the mail db in the basic view.  Are you now able to select the document without a crash?

If so you could copy the mail into a sample database from this view and then send it along.

Have you tried this?

I was able to delete the two emails using this method.  The mail file is fine now, however I created a new Notes 9.0 mail file as the old one was an upgrade from Notes 8.5, so I did not want to rely on it anymore.  After researching the message logs, it appears that it was a Java error and the sender's email may have contained something that triggered my error.

Thanks for all the help.

Solution

Embedded Mime elements

In your Lotus Notes Client, go to "File", "Preferences", "Basic Notes Client Configuration".

The are two points "Show in-Line MIME images as attachments", and "Disable embedded brower for MIME mail". Tick both.

Now open the offending E-Mail and delete it.

Notes can normally deal with badly formatted E-Mails, on the odd occasion that a mail is extremely badly formatted, just do the above.

Update your Notes client to the latest licensed version you posess, and switch the mime setting back on, if needed make a mail rule moving or deleting the offending sender.

Sincerely

double check your preview pane is closed...

We have scanners that generate 30MB e-mails with encoded MIME (re: gibberish) in the body of the message.  Notes wants to load all 30MB before the e-mail will appear, when all the user want to do is delete the message.  This is particularly frustrationg when the user has the preview pane open, as the message will load into the preview pane, effectively freezing the client until all 30 MB have loaded.  In every instance, the user insists they have the preview pane closed, when it's open about .5mm.  When I double-check that the user has the preview pane completed closed (using either the buttons or the view pane control panel) I can just click on the e-mail and delete it from the view.
