Can't open mail file using mail9.ntf when using Browser Plug In

  • Release: 9.0.1

I'm in the beginning stages of upgrading our servers to Domino 9.0.1.

I've got a test server right now that was an 8.5.3 server and had a mail file on it with an 8.5.3 template.  I upgraded the server to 9.0.1 but initially didn't upgrade the design of the mail file.  That template being used was Mail85.ntf.

I was able to access the mail file via a browser using the Notes plug in without any issue.

I upgraded the design on this mail file to mail9.ntf template and now I cannot open the mail file.

I have no issue accessing other databases on this server.  However, when I try and access  it just says "connecting" and then eventually is times out and says the server is taking too long to respond.

Am I supposed to be using a different template?  Or enabling something somewhere?

Thanks,

Pam

Hi Pam,

Thanks for your interest in Notes Browser Plugin,

I assume you are trying to perform administrative actions on the mail file and not actually trying to open the mail file to check your mails. Opening your mailbox to check mails is blocked in the Notes Browser Plugin by intent. I would point you to your Standard/Basic client or iNotes to access your mails in the mail file.

There is a new application setting introduced as a part of 901 that guards access to mail files through Notes Browser Plug-in. To reach this, Right click your mail file (or select Mail file and press Alt + Enter), select  Application-->Properties -> on the first tab:

This property by default is checked which blocks Notes Browser plugin form accessing mail files. To access Database Properties from Notes Browser Plug-in this property needs to be unchecked. You can do this by accessing the mail file form basic/Standard client and unchecking the adjoining check box.

Once "Don't allow open in Notes Browser Plug-in" is unchecked, then you will be allowed to access Mail file properties from Notes Browser Plug-in also. This gives access only to the properties of the mail file, not to the contents of the mail file, so for example you wont be able to check your mails from the Notes Browser Plug-in. That was never allowed from from Notes Browser Plug-in.

Still isn't working

Thanks Sunil.  But I'm sorry, no disrespect intended, but that is the stupidest thing I've heard.  Why, if I'm accessing other applications, and I have a workspace with an icon for my mail file, would it not allow me open it?

As it is, I did what you said above, and de-selected that option in the properties for the mail file, and I'm get an error "mail operation is not supported".  I don't really care if I can see or not see properties of the mail file from the Browser plug in.  I'm more concerned with getting the mail to work for when we actually upgrade the production servers and users.

This is a test server, so I enabled HTTP, because it wasn't before, and attempted to open my mail file using the "Open Inotes" link in the top right corner, and it still doesn't work.  It just says "connecting".

Why, when my mail files used the mail85.ntf template was I able to open it from the icon on the workspace within the Notes Browser?

What do I need to do to fix this so that my mail file, which is using the mail9.ntf template, can be opened with the iNotes link?

Thanks

Try this
This syntax assumes your Domino Server is Windows

nconvert.exe -s -u mailfilename * mail9.ntf

then do

ndbmt.exe mailfilename -compactThreads 0

then see if you can open with Notes Client and then open with iNotes

Still not working

Hi John.

Thanks for those commands, however it didn't make any difference.  I was able to open the mail file in the client, but not in iNotes.

Is it possible I'm missing something on the server document?  Do I need to have something enabled?  SSL?

Reason for blocking mail file from opening in Notes Browser Plugin

Hi,

I have a question. Why the mail file is blocked from opening in Notes browser plugin?

The NBP is intended to be used in our organization to replace Notes Client. We would like to let users have offline mail files as well as online.

Let the mail file open in iNotes from NBP is ok, but it should be option to open local mail replica in NBP while offline.

Thanks for any reasonable answers,

Tom

Notes Browser Plugin always intended to run Legacy Notes/Domino applications only.
Hi Pam, Tom,

Notes Browser Plugin is positioned to run along side iNotes as a comprehensive solution to enable customers to move from a thick client i.e. Notes to the web platform. Notes Browser Plugin allows users to run their legacy applications in a browser while iNotes is the mailing solution.
Notes Browser Plugin roadmap has always maintained that it will support only Legacy Notes/Domino applications while iNotes will serve as the mailing solution.

Thanks,
Sunil Dongre.

Do you have inotes configured?
What we try to do is to re-direct your mailfile open request to IBM iNotes.  We find the server your mailfile is on and then create an http link to it and then open it.  So if you don't have it configured, it should just error out and not take this long.  Can you see if you have iNotes account, your location document is pointing to correct server and mailfile, and the server has been enabled for http access?
If you still get errors, please paste client_clock=30 output (add this to notes, ini) and paste it here or send me.

Isn't the mail9.ntf template inotes?

The location document is pointing to the correct server and mail file.

Http is enabled.

I put the line in the notes.ini as and nothing shows up in the console_log or the domino console.  I had it as client_clock=30 with console_log_enabled=1 as well as client_clock=30 output as you have it below.

It just shows that I my sessions connected and disconnected when I look at the console log.

Could I be missing a setting on my server document?

I may have to call support.

I've fixed part of the issue but why is https hard coded in url?

I figured out part of the issue was that port 80 wasn't open on my server.  Once I did that I was able to hit the server directly using IP etc. and open my mail without issue.

However when using the Browser Plug In, and I go to use the iNotes link in the top right corner or the File - Open iNotes, the url it is trying to reach is https://myserver.com and it fails.  If I change it manually in the address bar to http://myserver.com then it works without issue.

First, why is this hard coded and second, where can it be changed?   We do not use SSL and have no intention of using it at this time.  I think this is something that cannot and should not be forced on an organization in order to use a feature.
