I am completely new to using IBM Notes, it has been very easy to follow with the exception of understanding the purpose of  Workspace.  I cannot find anyone on my team that  can explain it to me.

In a nutshell can someone please explain the benefit of such?

Similar to what you have on your phone
On your phone, icons launch different applications. The workspace is basically the same concept, with each icon being a different Notes application (or database, using earlier terminology).

Original Iconic view into Applications
This link gives general background on the invention of Lotus Notes. That was 30 years ago. Lotus Notes was designed to be a collection of applications. You are probably more aware of it for mail & calendar. But it really was and is much more than that. The workspace was a view of icons to navigate all of the applications that you had added to your workspace. Tabs allowed you to group the icons even more. What's ironic is the workspace is 25 years old yet when you look at a modern interface on an iOS device, it looks eerily familiar to the IBM Notes workspace.

If you are only using IBM Notes for mail, calendar, contacts, todo, etc, the workspace has no real benefit over the more modern icons and bookmark interfaces. If your company has many custom Notes Applications, the workspace interface can be a more optimal interface vs the bookmarks on the left hand side underneath the Open drop down.

How do I add applications to the different tabs?

You can really only add Applications if your company has developed and is hosting them on ...
Just like your mail is hosted on a Domino server, the applications would need to be developed and hosted on a server. You add the applications by hitting Control+O, navigate to a corporate server that has applications and open/bookmark them. Your company may not have any if they are only using it for mail. You can also develop local applications with the designer client available for free download on the web.

A simple way to see how one might add "Applications" to your workspace....do the following:
- Go to your workspace
- Hit Control+O (or Command+O on a mac)
- Scroll through the local applications, double click to open one. The act of doubleclicking will add it to your workspace. Then you can drag and drop to move the icon on your workspace
- Some applications to look at are Log or contacts

- You can also create a new database like a personal notebook/journal: hit Control+N to create a new db, give it a title and filename and choose the template "Notebook". Now you can take notes in a personal electronic notebook.

In case you meant moving an app
If you meant how do you move an icon in your workspace to a different tab, the answer is that you drag it to that tab. It works a little weird sometimes if you have a ton of icons like a developer might (i've got about 150 icons spread among 6 tabs), but then again it's a lot easier to me than moving iPhone icons around.

Add apps from the Domain Catalog

If your system is set up so apps show up in catalog.nsf, then just find them by title, click the actual document row, and hit the 'open' view action. This opens the app and puts it on your workspace.

To move them to different tabs, just drag them to the tab.

The workspace is pretty much identical to the iPhone/Andorid concept only 30 years old...Notes been doin' the app thang for a long time!

Adding Applications

If you want to add applications to a tab, all you need to do is to open the tab, and then open the application.  That will place the application icon in that tab.
