Corrupted NSF - docs missing or not, Replica vs Copy??

I have a mail NSF which had emails going back to 2001.  There was a disk crash on the server and I had to use a recovery program to retrieve the NSFs.

For one of the mail files, it was now missing 4 years of RECENT emails.

The remote replica we keep which serves as the back up seems to somehow replicated to now also be missing the 4 years of emails.

It's not a fully consistent 4 years - there are a few intact between 2009 and 2013 - I suspected maybe there was a deletion?  Probably not with the few emails inbetween.

Here's the weirdness (one of them!) ... the remote replica is about 40 gig.  When I make a replica of it, the replica is 40 gig.

But if I make a copy of it then the copy is about 20 gig.

This makes me think that the documents might somehow still be there if the file size is intact with a replica.

In both the 20 gig and 40 gig versions of the NSF, they are both at 99.4 and 99.6 percent used (for disk space).

I have checked the trash folder (and nothing) and created a view without a selection formula (still nothing) and created an alternative view to show soft deleted docs (and still nothing).

Any suggestions of what might be taking up that extra 20 gig and how to restore it?  It's really urgent of course.

- Thank you

Number of documents
Hello David!

What about number of documents on both NSF?

It is normal that a copy reduce the file size, but if there are the same number of documents, nothing was lost.

Best Regards!

Not enough information to go on?
What was the recovery program you mentioned?

Also you state

"The remote replica we keep which serves as the back up seems to somehow replicated to now also be missing the 4 years of emails."

if this was where you retrieved the backup from couldn't the problem have been it was not truly backing up the data and because of a problem and was missing 4 years of data...

For that so-called backup to now also be missing the 4 years via replication what you believe is a good backup, the notes would of had to have been deleted in the good replica and then the deletions would have replicated...  I doubt that would of happened without your knowledge....

Do you have any true backups from before the disk crash?

Try running compact -c -d -i
From what I read on the history of the issue, there has been some deletions on the Mail file, so I assume that the 20gig was eaten up by white spaces made by the deletions that you said,  compact -c -d -i will discard all of the white spaces on the mail file.
