Domino SMTP HUB Servers

Hi,

In our environment total no of users are 10,000 and we are using 2 SMTP servers and 2 Mail HUB servers for routing emails in/out.

Current routing mentioned below:-

Server HUB A & Server HUB B are the mails HUB servers in HQ which have been used for mail transferring from local domino servers to Mail HUB server to SMT01 & SMT02 further will pass to Iron Port and vice versa.

We are planning to decommission HUBMAIL severs and wanted to routing mails directly via SMTP1/2 servers therefore what configuration changes are necessary to be able to exclude those 2 servers from the mail flow? & What are the possible risks?

Your suggestion will be highly appreciated

My Guess

Is there is a connection doc between the smtp server and the mail hubs. and the hubs are part of the same name notes network that the mail servers are in.  If you put the smtp servers in the same named network it would see the users mail servers.   The assumption is that none of the mail server sit behind a firewall restriction that only allowed hubs to access the server.

thanks Barry your quick response.

Yes we have connection doc between the SMTP servers and the mail hubs.
hubs mail servers and other mail servers are in same domain however SMTP servers are in different domain.

Domain

You said the smtp servers where in a different notes domain?   If that is the case  there must be a name and address book that resolves the users internet address to  to notesname and domain?

If so i would just move the smtp servers into the same notes domain /notes named network as the mail servers and let the smtp servers act as a hub for mail routing

Thanks Barry for your input.

yes Mail Servers and SMTP both are in differnt domain.

below is the describes which addressbooks are in use in the SMTP domain.

Detailed description

Names.nsf     =       Address book of the SMTP domain.

                             Contains the SMTP configuration

namesABC.nsf         =       Replica of Address book of the Mail domain.

Used in the name resolving process of the router for users - groups - mail-in databases.

XYZnab.nsf    =       Replica of Address book of the customer domain.

Used in the name resolving process of the router when resolving Internet addresses.

Directory Assistance is referring to namesABC.nsf and XYZsnab.nsf via the database da.nsf.

as per you suggestion we needs to move SMTP servers in to mail servers domain?

is it any alternative way to achieve the target which will be easy and simple to understand?

Thanks in advance!!

SMTP Hub Servers

The reason why you currently have hubs is to accept/send the the non notes mail to the smtp servers.  What is proposed is to changed the functionality of the smtp servers to act as a hub as well.   You can just change the connection doc that was sending the email to the smtp server and the one from the smtp to the hub to another mail server and let that act as a mailserver  and hub

Chances are you hub acts as a replication server for the address book.   What is reason for wanting to eliminate the hubs?   Is it really worth it?  The really don't need to be on a separate  physical box. VM ware  or moving it to a partition on another server works as well.

Thanks Barry again:)

Do you mean the change the connection doc that was sending email to smtp server- connection doc which is created with HUB mail servers those needs to be replace with SMTP servers name?

This is part of a global project to consolidate all Lotus Notes mail which will deliver cost and support efficiencies for the company.

If we eliminate those hub mail servers than it will be any impact on SMTP servers for 10,000 users?

What is the advantage/disadvantage of the hub mail servers.

Can you let us know how we can implement this ? also What are the possible risks in details?

Is it possible for you to give me complete plan or TechNet ?

How we can test directly on production servers for 10,000 UsersL

Yes you need to change the connection docs with the mailserver name and ip address of the mail server that you chose to be the new "hub".  You might need to add the smtp server / mail server into the access server field as well.

You are going to put a additional strain on this server  for forwarding the email for users not on the "hub" server and you also need to insure you are replicating the names.nsf

we are not selecting any new "hub" servers as we need to move hub mail functionality to SMTP severs and decommission hub mail servers.

SMTP Hub Servers

The easiest way to do this is keep the hub servers and make them also function as the smtp relay by changing your ironport  to route to the hubs and the hubs to route the email to the ironport.

On the hubs you likely would need the smtp task loading if it was not

If you insist on keeping the smtp servers you would need to combine names.nsf /connection docs note names networks and mail domains.  That is why i recommend the above approach

I believe Barry's last post suggests you hire him as a consultant
It's pretty clear you're not entirely sure what you're doing, and the amount of help you are requesting from others for free has probably passed what most are now willing to give.  I'd suggest Barry as a perfectly suitable candidate to hire as a consultant for a couple of days to resolve your issue.
