We're sorry, but Word has run into an error...

I have a user that has Windows 7 (64bit), Office Home & Business 2013 and IBM Notes 9.0.1 FP4.

1.  If the user opens a Word document (docx) directly with Microsoft Word (Notes client is not involved), Microsoft Word works as expected.

2.  If the user opens a Word document from email (as an attachment) in iNotes, Microsoft Word works as expected.

3.  If the user opens a Word attachment from email using the IBM Notes client, Microsoft Word opens and then immediately closes without an error.

If the user tries option 3, the only way to get the Microsoft Word working again is by opening Microsoft Word by itself and he get's the following error message:

"We're sorry, but Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly.  Word will need to be closed as a result.  Would you like to repair now?"

The user clicks: <Repair Now> and Microsoft Word then goes through the repair process and does some kind of internet check and then the product works fine until the user forgets and opens another Microsoft Office attachment that was emailed to him.

I have the same setup as he.  I tried what he tried and all works fine for me with the same attachments.

Reinstalling Office and Notes has no effect.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

re docx attachment issue
Hi Quin
You may need to have  Compatibility Pack installed
Similar issue here :
Title: Unable to view attachments created as Office file formats
.docx, .pptx, .xlsx
Doc #: 1297394
URL: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=899&uid=swg21297394

- Have you checked the OS File associations?
- When you attempt to open a .doc attachment, was WORD 2010 open at the
time?

Please test the following:

 - close all versions of WORD
 - open a  .doc first.  what happens?

-  close WORD... do same for docx and note what happens.

-  close WORD ... repeat with files from desktop

I have Office 2013

 -  Docx is associated with Word (2013)  --  There is no other version of office on this PC

 -  Office was not open when attempting to open the attachment and the user click the <Open> button and not the view button as mentioned in your link.

I haven't tested *.doc attachments.

EDIT: I tried a *.DOC attachment and it works just fine.  It seems it's just the DOCX attachment and only from the client does the user have a problem.

It wasn't as much of a fix as it was a workaround. Setting the office programs to run in compatibility mode for Windows 7 allowed them to open properly from Notes.  The user is error free now.
