How Can I Use Notes Client on Domino server while server is running

I see that nlnotes is not longer part of the install for Domino server.  I get it, it was a security risk.  However I work on some specialized stuff on a couple of mostly isolated domino servers that while the server is running I can open a few databases at the same time ad run some agents against some specially marked documents very very quickly,  There are more reasons it is a benefit for me and a few reasons are less risk to the overall production environment because the server is isolated.

I need to continue to be able to do my work this way, so is there a work around to having the client be available on a Domino server while the domino server is running?  Would creating a separate directory from the Domino server and installing the standard Notes client work?   Will copying over the nlnotes.exe from an older version of the Domino server work to allow that to be used to start up the notes client work?

Suggestions appreciated.

client on server

Well, it is a security risk, but as far as I know there is nothing to prevent you from installing the Notes client on the server - either standard or basic. I've done it often and never had a problem with it. The client will install in a 'notes' directory, the server in the 'domino' directory.

If needed, just install Notes
As Stuart mentioned, it will work fine. I'm not even sure why it's frowned upon, as the two data directories don't interact with each other, and anyone that can open a server database locally on the client can probably arrange to copy that database to another system and do the same thing there, too, so I don't see it as a big security risk. The nlnotes.exe method was removed several years ago. As I recall, we kept running into issues where it would corrupt server data, so it's definitely not recommended to try copying over an older version.

The reason that you shouldn't do this, is that people make mistakes.
I've seen a number of admins corrupt Server Dbs, because they access the files in the server data directly when the server is running.  Big mistake. Also responsible companies have change control, and often track things, use AdminP etc.  Admins often do this to bypass those change controls. Also installing the client will alter COM settings on the server, so COM will no longer point to the server installation when registered, but the Client installation, this can have implications for 3rd party apps that get installed.

Dont use a notes client on the Server, what ever it is you want to do, there is another way to do it.

32 Bit Version of Domino does ship with NLNotes, however 64 Bit does not b/c we do not hav...
Good Afternoon Colleen,

I am the Team Lead for the Domino Server crash and Performance.

To answer your first question --> I see that nlnotes is not longer part of the install for Domino server.  I get it, it was a security risk.

Ans: I am assuming you are running a 64 Bit Version of Domino and not a 32 Bit Version of Domino given the above statement. We actually still ship nlnotes with 32 Bit Domino products and confirmed with my 9.0.1 FP3 installation this morning. However Domino 64-Bit has never had a nlnotes client because we do not have 64 Bit Version of the Lotus Notes Client..

You go on to mention --> I work on some specialized stuff on a couple of mostly isolated domino servers that while the server is running I can open a few databases at the same time ad run some agents against some specially marked documents very very quickly,  There are more reasons it is a benefit for me and a few reasons are less risk to the overall production environment because the server is isolated.

Is there a reason why a Notes/Admin Client cannot be installed in the same Network as this server to complete the necessary work?

Often times have customers ask me what my thoughts are with running the lite client on a Domino Server and I created this technote years back:

Lotus Software Knowledge Base Document

Title:        Launching NLNOTES.EXE on the Domino Server sometimes results in a Hang or a Crash and this is not recommended to do.
Doc #:        1421059
URL:
http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21421059

Even with the Lotus Notes (Nlnotes) on a server it is not recommended to run it while the server is up as it writes to the same log.nsf, uses the same Names.nsf and all the databases on the server locally. If the client was to crash/hang then the entire server would hang as well and cause an outage. If the nlnotes were to crash so would the server.

This is the same for installing a Lotus Notes Client in a separate directory.  Can it be done yes, however a crash of the client can lead to the Domino Server crashing/hanging and is only suggested for testing and not used in production. Also to note we do not support the Lotus Notes Client installation on a Server Version OS either.

Suggestion

Why not run those agents on the server? Put the agent in the template and deploy it with the rest of the design. Then you use the console command tell amgr run to execute the agent on the server.

You could also run the agent on a regular client computer. If you feel that the agent must run very quickly in order not to mess up the database, you should probably not run it in first place.

Thanks for all the responses still looking for some additional feedback

Thanks to everyone who responded.  I understand the risks, both the crashing and the security and because of the specialized work I do, the security is better my way of doing this work and crashing, it's happened once or twice but over what I gain from working locally far out weighs the risks.

I'm working with my IBM rep to help me, hopefully, solve this.  I've installed a client and that's working fine....too fine.  It's maintaining the client security and checking and wont let me work locally.  I need to work locally and by-pass some of the client authorizization checking otherwise it could cause some other issues that I don't want to happen.

Thanks again for the responses.  Fingers crossed either through my IBM rep or web searching I can find my answer.

Colleen, did you see my response above?
I noted, we do still ship nlnotes.exe only with 32 Bit Domino. We do not ship nlnotes with 64 Bit Version as we do not have a 64 Bit Notes Version. If we had a full 64 Bit Notes version then a 64 Bit nlnotes client would be included.
