Text issues with Ubuntu 16.04

I have an issue after upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04.

 

1.  With a signature in e-mail. When starting to compose a new e-mail the signature text is all black boxes and they change to the correct font after I hit the enter key the first time.

2.  When typing and I type a word that is not in the dictionary, the entire row changes to a light gray color and the word is underlined with the red line.

 

Any ideas from anyone on how to fix these two issues.  No matter what I do, I cannot seem to find the answer.  I have even tried to change the default fonts in Notes and the system to no avail.

 

I have pasted an image of both issues.
