System restore with DAOS installed

i perform disaster recovery backups everyday on our servers, especially the mail server.  I have successfully rebuilt two of our file servers with a bare metal restore with the total time taking less than an hour.  When I have the DR backup run, the mail server which continues to run.  The file attachments stored / indexed by DAOS are kept on a separate drive but it too is backed up the same time as the Domino server drive.  I believe I understand that what resides in the DAOS structure is synchronized with the mail file.  If the mail server loses a hard drive which causes it to crash, I know I can recover from this with a bare metal restore of which I would also restore the DAOS drive at the same time before restarting the Domino server.  What kind of problems will I encounter by performing a restore?  Are there surefire procedures for re-establishing the sync between the two?  I'm hoping to "experience" this over the 4th weekend by installing two new drives and performing a bare metal restore.

Don't foresee any issues there
If I understand your scenario correctly, you are doing a point-in-time restore of the entire Domino server, inclusive of its NLOs. That means the references from the NSFs will all exist in the NLO repository (or more correctly, whatever existed before will continue to exist after). The DAOS configuration files (daoscat.nsf and daos.cfg) will also be correct since all files are from the same point in time.

Just to be clear, though, you are backing up the NLOs after the NSFs, right? You don't want to overlap them or do the NLOs first, because changes to the NSFs after the NLO backup is hardened would not be in your restore data. See here for more details and overall discussion of DAOS backup and restore:

System restore with DAOS installed

Chad,

Thank you for the link.  When I go searching for information, I suppose I don't input the search criteria quite correctly and I wind up with the library of congress for the search results.  In answer to your question, yes...  The .NLO files which exist on the drive dedicated to DAOS get backed up second.  Both hard drives arrived today so tomorrow will be launch day for me.  I figure it is better to do a dry run at a crash recovery to verify it works and then know I can just reflect back and know it will work after the inevitable happens.  Appreciate the help.

Excellent approach
It's become rare to actually perform DR scenarios instead of leaving them in the realm of theory. If you don't mind, please reply to this thread with your experiences.

System Restore

Hey Chad,

Wasn't able to make the DR work, there was something wrong with the backup program recognizing the hard drives so have ordered a couple additional drives to try again.

Assuming no product issue?
Jon,

Thanks for the update. It sounds like you weren't able to make it past a hardware/driver issue to know if the Domino backup was good, but I want to confirm that to be the case.

Hardware driver

Chad,

it wasn't anything with Domino, I wasn't able to get that far.  Apparently I'm in need of a driver to install with the backup software so it knows how to "read" a 3tb drive.  It's a long story why I'm using a 3tb drive for a boot drive but in short.. I bought it as a 2tb, the label said 2tb, the part number of the drive indicated it was a 2tb so, i never checked when i installed the 2008r2 OS.  Now I have to have a 3tb drive in order to do a restore as it backs up not only what is written to the drive but the actual physical clusters of the drive which in this case are about 2.6tb... larger than what a 2tb drive holds so...  waiting on their tech support but i am actively pursuing this and it will happen sometime soon.
