email to 2 people, one is delivered later

I some times get email sent to 2 people in the office.  One person gets theirs delivered immediately, the other is delayed significantly.  Is there a configuration that is responsible for this?  Can I fix this?

Thank you,

Some questions

Is the source of the mail external? Does Message Tracking show when the message was received, and when it was delivered to the recipients' home mail server?  Are the sender and two recipients on the same server?  How great is the delay? Is the same person experiencing the delay each time?

More questions...

Is either user set up on a local replica / managed Replica?

In addition to Jay's questions about mail tracking, look at the document properties on the individual email itself. It will show when the document was created.

I thought a replied to Jay, but I don't see it.  So here it is.

Source is external.

Log shows each message has it's specific (different) date.

Two recipients are on same server (I only have one), sender is external.

The delay is about 35 minutes.

No local replicas used.

Created for both is the same time.

However, Mark gave me the idea to look at received header.  Up until last, the route they took were the same, then one went to one IP and the other went to another.  I only assume the delay was due to the other route taken.  Does this sound likely?

Thank you,

Durwin

Delayed mail on the next to last hop

It sounds like the delays are on the Internet router side. If the delays were happening on your server, you should see the same happening with mail that originates internally.  Domino is probably routing the messages as soon as it receives them.  If it is receiving them at a delay from your Internet gateway, then the issue would be at that layer.

You mentioned that the headers of the messages show the same IPs up to the handoff to your server. Are these the IPs of your Internet gateways?

emails took different routes

The IPs just before they got to my public IP, are different in the 2 addresses.  I am assuming one hung around a little longer on its last stop.  I can't figure why it would, but that  is the only explanation.

Thank you,

Perhaps you have greylisting in place on the Internet gateway

Under greylisting, the Internet gateway will temporarily reject any email from a sending gateway it doesn't recognize (that is, that hasn't seen recently enough to be in that Internet gateway's cache). The delay may represent the retry interval of the connecting Internet gateway.
